I don't know that this is true or if its true for the older models, but mine reads cool and is cool to the touch everywhere.

The cooling system hasn't changed in the iMac for ages. It's simpler on the 9400M G only models but it's still heatpipes on every other one.

Ya, I think it has to do with the chipset more then the heatpipes. 😛

The 9400M G models are going to be cooler since the processor and GPU aren't on the same heatpipe. The processor has its own heatsink and fan while the chipset has a passive cooler.
