I love my iMac but I use my PC for anything processor or hard drive intensive because it has much better cooling than my iMac. The iMac's cooling isn't the greatest IMO..

Why do you think that? Does your CPU get hot in the 90° C area all the time? Does your HDD heat up to 60° C?

You can always crank the fans up to the point they are as annoying as PC fans.

I wanted to get an iMac but now that I was looking at desktop PC's I don't know which one I should get. I was comparing the hardware of an iMac to a dell XPS machine and they blow the iMac out of the water and it is cheaper. But I plan on building a PC so I know I can get better hardware and it will be cheaper than the iMac. I am so confused right now but tell me what you guys think if I should get a PC or iMac because I am voting pc right now with price and hardware

If you go by a spec sheet yes you are getting more specs for the money with a PC....However, it is a mistake to think that more specs will yield better performance...People often do that with vehicles but it doesn't always translate into a better user experience...Let me put it this way, I'm typing this from a quad core 1TB windows 7 PC....When I edit videos on this PC it is sticky and poorer performing than a tiny Macbook Air...And yes, you have loads of software to choose from with windows....Unfortunately, I've found that most of the software that comes standard on a mac such as photo and video editing is better than 90% (or more) than software available for windows that comes with or without the operating system (except games)....

Really? I think my iMac has amazing cooling. That is why the top is often too hot to touch, all that heat is being removed from the CPU and GFX chips and sent to heat up my iMacs exterior. Well thats my understanding of my hot mac.

Building a PC takes 30 minutes.

No it does not! I have built too many PCs in my time to swallow that remark. Try more like a few hours, after installing Windows, updating drivers, and getting all those hundreds of security updates. And then spending a week troubleshooting the inevitable driver issue. Yuk. I outgrew that years ago. Give me a Mac. They're fast and elegant. And they truly are the complete package.

A pc will save you money, I just built a i5-2500K 3.3ghz, gtx 560ti, 16gb memory, ssd hdd combo for about $1000. I overclock it to 4.2ghz when I use FSX or DCS A-10 and the noise is about the same as my 2008 mac pro (bootcamp). I have been running windows in bootcamp for three years and have been pleased with the performance of windows 7. If you don't mind the bulk and lack of included monitor a properly built pc will out perform the imac.

If you needed hyper threading for media work, just get the i7 for an extra $100.

Where are these XPS Specs that blow the iMac out of the water? I am sure it is Apples to Oranges like most spec comparisons. If you build a system with actual comparable setups I would wager the price difference is much less.

Look a the fugly Dell All-in-ones. That is a more valid comparison, and they don't compare to the iMac, IMO. Plus they have to run Windows.

Give me the World of OSX any day. The Apple ecosystem is worth $$ to me.

And if I need Windows, I can still run it.

I'm getting a dell all-in-one, and I'm buying it for its specs, not its looks. Of course I was going to get an iMac but I changed my mind since the uses I have would better suit a windows pc.

Anyway, you could always buy a windows pc and get the lowest-end MacBook air if you can't make up your mind. And also if you have enough money as well.

What one did you get? BTW, the OptiPlex is NOT an all in one. That is a monitor with the slim desktop box strapped to the monitor stand. The only one that is a true All-In-One is the Vostro and from what I have seen it does not compare with the iMac performance wise.

What in it beats the Specs of an iMAC?
From what I have seen on their website :

The best proc you can get in the Vostro is an i5 2.5Ghz.
Also, the top video card you can get is a Nvidia GT525.
It also apparently tops out at 8GB memory.

The iMac can support
- up to a i7 3.4 GHz
- up to 32GB RAM
- up to a 6970M w/ 2GB VRAM
- up to 2TB Drive and supports Solid State Drives
- faster external I/O with FW and TB
- OSX and Windows.

I have nothing against PCs. If that is what someone wants, that is good for them. However, personally I value the Apple environment and how it integrates with everything Apple we own. That is worth $$ to me.

Hello:

I am new to forums and relatively new to the Mac. I’ve only been using a 21 inch iMac since the first of October.

I build my own computers and I use Windows, Linux, and OS X.

The iMac was my first store bought computer since a Packard Bell 286 in the late 90’s. The iMac was the most expensive, but it was well worth the price in terms design, OS, and available software.

I play games that are not available on the IMac, so I have a dedicated Windows game machine. I’ve also been running Linux for years, and I have no intentions of giving it up.

If you are a gamer buy a Windows system, if you are a tinker buy a box a box of part.

But for the whole iMac experience from the Apple Store has been pleasant. Just bring it home and plug it in, and it works. I am a tinker, and a gamer, but at the last whistle, it’s the Mac. :)

I'm getting the Inspiron one 2320 with the i5 processor, 6gb of ram and a 1GB graphics card. I don't know where you got the optiplex option from and the dell vostro looks too serious for my taste.

Then go build one. Why come to a Mac site asking a quesition if that is your only concern.

Go build your super fast PC. Then install Windows and ruin it.

Hahaha...

Then install Windows and ruin it.

Did you mean to say that?

Run it... ruin it... With Windows... All the same...

the only problem I have with pc's. after building one in a just under a year of having it built you start to get problems, like hardware faults, annoying blue screen of death components over heating, or software getting corrupted to the point you have to keep upgrading. Never used an i mac but planning getting on end of this year. how ever I got over 28 years of experiencing of pc's from ibm windows 2.5 to windows 7 ult with 8 core.. all end with the same issue's. to say a life of a cpu should be 10 years if you keep it in good condition and running it 24/7. how ever I that's less likely with a pc. and the anti virus payed or free don't cut it as there always someone creating a virus faster than a company can stop it from spreading. from what I have heard about apple macs they don't need a anti v. plus I mac has option like boot camp were you can install a copy of windows 7 ( note full clean install unregistered copy) and use pc products on a I mac.

I thought you didn't care about looks?

Do what you want. Many people here will do and say anything they can to bash Windows/PC's. Do I blame them? No, not necessarily, this is, after all, a Mac forum. But if you're looking for mac vs. pc related advice, I'd try someplace else.

A Macintosh computer is a PC just it's a PC with an Apple logo on it :(

The difference is the looks and the operating system. IMO the operating system alone is worth staying with mac but the looks are so sexy on my desk.

I'd recommend the OP to get a Mac, hands down. I will never be purchasing a Windows machine again. Good luck to the OP :)

Well, I still can build a computer for the same exact money as an iMac and it would just kill the iMac

I've used pc's for years, heavily into installing latest upgrades for gaming, etc. I'll admit I don't play many games anymore the last few years, but since I tried my first mac around 18months ago I was kind of surprised recently when I realized I don't have even one pc left in my house. The quality and user experience of a mac computer simply can't be matched by any pc. I now have 4 mac computers, ipad2, iphones, atv2 in my house.

A mac computer with 2/3's the hardware specs of a pc is a much better computer, no question. Except for games. But I cringe at the idea of having to use a windows pc again for personal use.

DancesWithSmurf: buy another pc now, but if you do buy a mac one day you'll understand what so many people say about them.

people don't take into account the cost of the aluminium, glass, (1 year of designing the computer to be beautiful and work vs 1 week for a pc counterpart), comes with os x vs windows you have to buy for a few hundred, comes with aluminium keyboard vs one that you have to buy and is plastic, comes with premium mouse vs buying one for $100, also a lot of people compare the size of the display to a lower resolution display at the same size. Then there is the resale value. PC you just throw out, mac you sell for half price. Basically the Mac is cheaper if you wanted your PC to look beautiful and didn't pirate windows.
