iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) Order Thread

First one i spent a couple of days on the phone with Apple support trying to set it up and was finally told that it was defective and send it back. They could not find a replacement so I had to reorder and wait almost 2 months to get a new one.
The second one just keep crashing. I left it on overnight to do backups and in the morning nothing backed up and I got messages that it shut down because of a problem. Then it crashed 3 or 4 time a day. Again on the phone with Apple support and they were no help.

It sounds like it should be fine as most threads I am seeing with issues are 2013-2015 MacBooks.

I updated my imac to bigsur - it seems to work normally. But I still had a problem on the catalina - imac accidentally wake up from sleep every 2 hours and then went into sleep again. On Bigsur problem remained :(

Power Nap disable. I think I've turned off everything I can, including the ability to wake the imac from the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Wake on lan is disabled, network sharing is disabled, remote access programs are removed, external USB devices are disabled.
When communicating with Apple support, I was given the advice to create a new user and try imac with him - I haven't tried yet.

Thanks - do you know if the Bootcamp partition is still called Bootcamp or if it changed to ‘EFI Boot’?

In Activity Monitor, under the Energy tab, there is a column which denotes if any programs are disabling sleep mode. You may want to check that.

As an FYI - if you didn't buy AppleCare when you purchased your new computer and you're getting an error, check mysupport.apple.com for the purchase date. Mine was set to January 1, 1985. Not surprisingly, it wouldn't let me buy the support package.
 
Well, I went ahead and ordered one. I7, 5700xt, 1tb, upgraded ethernet. I'll probaby upgrade the ram to 36g. Probaby overkill for me, but prices arent too bad. I've been using a 3,1 Mac Pro that I upgraded to 5,1. I was wishing they would come out with a not-so-pro tower, sigh. But now it's becoming glitchy and I'm afraid I may start losing stuff soon.

I'm not really afraid about the whole Intel thing. I think there are too many machines out there for them to stop support before at least 5 years. I wouldn't want to be investing in a new Mac Pro right now, though.

Its my first new Mac in 11 years, though I've owned a bunch since my 512KE back in the 80s, lol. I'm wondering about the difference in performance. Any guesses? I've read through most of the posts. It seems like most are pretty happy.

Edit to add: I’m totally digging my iMac I got in august. Have it dual booting Catalina & Windows educational version (enterprise ver in disguise), with Big Sir on an external USB-C SSD.

Everything flies and I have no complaints. Removed stock Apple 8GB RAM and replaced with 64GB Crucial RAM and now I need a magnifying glass to see the memory pressure graph in Activity Monitor. :)

Congrats on the order. Been very happy with my 2020 iMac.

One thing I've read is you might have lower ram performance with that mix. I'd hope somebody else chimes in, but I've generally seen it recommended to just ditch the 8GB stick in order to benefit from a higher clock speed. If nobody does chime in, I believe this thread has some more comments. There's also a whole other thread on 2019/2020 memory compatibility which should help you reach a good decision.

I ended up with a pretty good price on my memory, got it on Prime day. I believe Cyber Monday also had some good rates more recently. You could consider if you want to get a larger chip pair to start, leaving some room for a future sale (should your needs increase in 2-3 years.)

I'm a bit morning brained still (and about to jump into a meeting): what combo are you thinking to get to 36GB? By default it has 2x 4GB chips, if that helps you.

I don't know why I typed 36g. I meant 32. Two 16g sticks. Anyway, thanks for replying. I actually did read that thread! I haven't bought it yet, and if a sale comes around I might jump up to 64, even though its overkill for me:)

It just shipped earlier today from Ireland. UPS says 14th-17th, but we'll see. Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. It's hard to leave the flexibility of my old Mac Pro, but I think its time.

I really appreciate the work Gary Sinise is doing to. I actually do dabble in a little audio mixing, but nothing serious. I guess I dabble in a lot of different things, like most folks. I don't depend on my desktop for my living though. I'm glad you're happy with yours. I guess I just needed a little positive reenforcement!
 
Just placed an order for the base model 27" iMac. I know, I know, the M1X model will be announced in 2021...
But, as a rule, I never buy first gen tech. I prefer for the initial bugs to be iron out. I let others do the beta test.

I don't need a graphical powerhouse either since this iMac will strictly be used for software dev (OSX/IOS). I also don't code on the road so I didn't want a laptop. Plus, I love that 5k screen! The internal 256gig SSD is enough since it will only host the OS and XCode. The rest will be on a thunderbolt 5-disk array. I did order 32gig of ram (2x16ig) from OWC.

Should be here between the 8th of January and the 15th. I'm in no hurry since I'm on duty during the holidays, so I wouldn't get to enjoy it fully. I also ordered a new iPad to replace my iPad 3... Which I still use daily to watch Youtube and with my Plex server. The battery still last about 4 hours on it.

So enough blahblah, time for me to go read the forums!

Just placed an order to replace my Late 2014 iMac 27.
Just ordered the basic 27. I don't game. I sometimes watch a video or two with VLC, Zoom now and again is al. Didn't need to do the upgrade at all. I have a 512 SSD now with half the space free still. Delivery is mid January
  • 3.8GHz 8-core 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • Radeon Pro 5500 XT with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 512GB SSD storage
  • Did upgrade to the 10GBE though for the money
  • Going to do my own ram upgrade

Nice choice, but that isn't the "basic" 27". This is quite the nice machine you got there!

I did went with the basic 27" myself since it's adequate for my need and I upgrade every 2.5 / 3.5 years max. I also went with self upgraded ram and ordered a 32gig (2x 16gig) set from OWC.

G.d I love Fedex...

They call me telling me that someone has to sign for the delivery.
They send me an email telling me that somebody has to sign for the delivery.
They send me a sms telling me that somebody has to sign for the delivery.
They leave the box on the porch and drive away...

But I did have someone at home (ready to sign for it!), so they did bring the baby inside...
 
That's a he** of a big box!
Too bad I'm too tired to unpack it and try it out. Oh well, weekend is coming soon...
 
My iMac shipped. Original shipping date was Jan 27-Feb 4th. Arrives next Friday Jan 8th but I figure it will arrive sooner.

Mine is coming shipping from Ireland

I'd love one of these but I have a recent Windows build with 10700, 64 GB and GTX 1050 ti and it meets my needs. But I'd prefer a Mac.
 
Guys, I want to exchange my 27" for a 27" with VESA mount, but the current shipping dates for the 27" VESA are Early February :eek:.

I am a bit upset because I have to return my 27" by 1/8, which means that I'll be without an iMac for a month (!).
Is there a way to convince Apple to extent my return holiday window (which is already generous enough) until I get the new one?
Or maybe the VESA one is likely to arrive waaaay sooner?

Thanks for the input.
