Look, I respect your side of this argument.
Them releasing the Macbook lineup before the offer at least lines up with the offer. Wouldn't you want the offer to have a consistent product throughout? I think that is normal.
I think most companies that do these sort of offers don't switch up the contents of the offer right in the middle of it or towards the end. And I don't think waiting a few more weeks really hurts Apple at all. They are selling a lot of Macs during this offer period and they will sell a lot when the new ones come out.

I can see how you can be somewhat right, I just don't find it intuitive nor logical. But it is true, they haven't released new macs during their offer periods, and the macbooks were released with some "air" between launch and BTS making sure that those who are willing to pay premium got the chance to, before BTS.

However, I still think this years iMac went horribly off schedule and they should be as desperate as us to release it. It will be very hard to speculate on when and why the launch date will happen, but it probably will not be before 21st either way.

They may "sell" them on the same day, and have the 27-inch delivered later. It happens fairly often: if I'm not mistaken, the rMBP began with a delivery estimate of 3-4 weeks, which then improved to 2-3 weeks, then to 1-2 weeks. Today I think it's as quick as 3-4 days, probably even less...

Not quite right. The rMBP were available in stores they just sold out. There is a difference between "having enough to sell to everyone who wants one" and not available anywhere. So one reason orders from the online store too weeks is because retail store were getting them (and also selling out so they too had backlogs).

If the product doesn't exist then don't inflict too much damage if it is not available for over a month. If it is available now then there is. You create an Osborne Effect of killing off sales of the current product. (and some folks have purchase orders in flight that need to be filled).

For example the new Amazon Fire. The entry Fire 2012 model is shipping on Sept 14 (after shindig they did on Sept 6th). The 7" HD model shipping Septh 24th (but didn't really exist before at HD). The 8" HD model is shipping in late Nov. It is a brand new product so no "Osborne Effect" impact on existing product. ( but Nov 20th is risky late if others competitors ship before then.)

Amazon would have blundered if the Fire 2012 wasn't available till 24th. The 7" HD till mid October and the 8" HD until late November.

I've got a new date for you guys...

the BTS program ends in september 21, if apple launch new imac now. lots of people would return their back to school promo imac in the 14 days return window.

so i'm guessing the new date is september 21 + 14 days = oct 5th or it could be oct 9 which falls in tuesday.

wont bet on anything, but if i'm correct I get a cupcake :D

I agree that this is the earliest release date we will see.

Someone should twit this Dalrymple a question about new iMacs ...

They have. He hasn't been willing to come forward with anything useful.

But then, he doesn't give rumors. He watches other rumors sites, links to articles & columns he finds interesting, and 5-6 times a year explicitly confirms or denies one.

Maybe his source is in the iPhone department ...

I am with forty2j on this. Oct 9th sounds pretty logical.
forty2j, Oct 9th is all yours.;) let's hope you are right

You know, we should have done a pool. Pick a date, $10 entry. Winner would probably get more than enough to buy their new iMac.

But then, the first date I liked was May 15.

Maybe it'll be May 15 2013 and you'll win the jackpot (which you'll need to buy a ticket to a very far place as you'll have all of us chasing you in anger... :D )

Why? If the apocalypse comes on Dec 21, is it the Mayans' fault for predicting it?

That would have been funny actually. If it's not against terms of service of the site that could be fun. My only real hope is that the iPhone 6 rumors don't start before we get some new desktops. That would be a bummer, but with the way things are going with the rumor mill these days, plausible.

But... you're being offered the chance of being the official iScapegoat™! Why aren't you honored? :D

(I jest, I jest. As long as it comes out within the end of October I'll be happy... after all we're halfway done with September anyway.)

Tuesday 9/25 is my pick! (probably wishful thinking, and its based off of no evidence whatsoever - just trying to have some fun :D )

They'll showcase World of Warcraft Mists of Pandaria within the iMac page that lists the new GPU features, etc.

They did this with World of Warcraft Cataclysm in early 2011 when the new MacBook Pro's came out in February. Their little page on gaming improvements showed screenshots of the game as well as the Wow branding.

Anyone notice the two iMacs on stage?

Why are they there....
