I cannot understand why anyone is speculating about retina on an iMac.

The first "consumer" 4k monitor will be available later this year for around $4k just for the monitor.

How long do people think it will take for this cost to have fallen to a level where Apple can contemplate adding it to an iMac?

This is not "just around the corner". Late 2014 refresh at best imho.

Broadwell is looking at delays.....

4k will make the cost higher, but maybe

Retina, retina, while nice, it's Not the be all and all of a computer.

TB2 maybe around the end of the year, might be worth having, if you use TB attachments.

i would be tempted to get a desktop this year if the HDD gets a 4TB option, a bump in graphics of at least 3GB, and the new thunderbolt 2 ports, but the chances of this happening is slim i will try to survive to late 2014 which should bring a modest upgrade.

Edited for accuracy :)

Im sure you are referring to that 50" Seiki(sp?). There is a reason its cheap. It is garbage(4k resolution but garbage image/color), using rejected 4k tv panels, and is only capable of 30Hz.

A proper 31.5" panel costs several grand by itself. There is a reason the Asus 4k monitor is $3,500. Apple will likely offer a 4k ACD For $3.5-4k this year but it is atleast 2 years MINIMUM from being able to offer a 4k based iMac, if they want to keep the price points anywhere close to the same as they are now.

Keep in Mind: Retina is NOT 4K!
Just take a look at the Pricedifference between Apples 15" MBP and the rMBP.

You are correct as to what Reina isn't. Technically the current 27" iMac is about 90% the resolution of what is needed for it to be considered Retina. So in theory a 27" iMac at 2816 x 1584 would be a Retina iMac.
