I get distracted easily, as it is I sometimes find myself staring at someones animated 'tar for minutes at a time.

Instead of staring at them, I curse them. Why people would choose avatars that annoy the daylights out of a certain percentage of other members is troubling, but why MacRumors even permits it is even more bewildering. It remains the only aspect that diminishes my enjoyment of an otherwise great site.

Does anybody want to post a link to a forum system that's on the other extreme? I've seen a few, but I don't want to strain my eyes looking for them again myself.

Has anybody ever encountered a forum systems implemented with image-sig support but with limits (e.g., by pixel size or bytesize) that make it more practical and less intrusive than a free-for-all?

This ones pretty bad... http://battleforums.com/showthread.php?t=112486

And vBulletin does seem to have a hack for image size limiting for sigs. Link Of course it is user made and not official really and I don't know if it works or not since I don't have a license to vBulletin.

While I wouldn't mind a sig bar size img like these... http://siggymaker.gfxedit.com/ img should probably stay off for other reasons.

Wow, that board is terrible.

Sure glad that we have it the way we do here at MR.

Its so true MR is so much more clean and elegant than most other forums. Hence the reason people enjoy posting here.....Its a good representation of Apple.

You can always disable avatars in their entirity or if there is a single avatar that bothers you, some ad blocking software will allow you to block select images. That's what I've done. If an avatar annoys me I block it with an ad blocker... no more annoying avatar!

That is horrendous.

This post in particular is very impressive. Post to 'stuff' ratio = 1:99.

I quite like those subtle little signature bars you linked to, and I know mine would be subtle and beautiful :p, but I can see the page being more distracting with them on. When I see some of the revolting effects people can get with plain text, I hate to think what they would be like in picture form. :D

This might be one of my favorite features on MacRumors actually. Images in sigs make a site look first of all, IMO, under developed and second, they are indeed annoying. Even smilies in sigs annoy me. :p Forums are for chatting and sigs are for showing off whatever you're chatting about with text.

What if MacRumors allowed signature images but you could have at most one image and it had to be exactly 1 pixel high? What could people do with that?

I imagine that they could use a solid-color bar, a dotted or dashed line, a pretty gradient, or a message in Morse Code. What else?

And how much more could they do if it was 2 pixels high?

This isn't a proposed change. I'm just curious what people might think of.

Don't know what they would do with a few pixels.
