Why does it do that on a regular basis? iMessage never does that to me :)

If a friend of yours worked in a military hospital, you would probably not be able to honestly say that. I have a friend who works for the military. iMessage will attempt to send him my messsage, but sometimes it's sent as a text message. That's why I'd like to be able to set my phone to default to sending him messages using SMS instead of WiFi.

One advantage that SMS has over iMessages is that in the event that the recipient's cellphone is not connected to a cell network, the message will wait inside a database until the recipient's cellphone receives a signal.

How does that affect the sending and receiving of iMessages on his phone?

If I send via imessage and it doesn't go through because of a Military Hospital is in the way, it ends up waiting in the same SMS database you speak of after 5 minutes. You already expect him not to have connection for long periods, I don't see why the 5 minute wait is an issue.

BTW: If your imessage isn't going through, tap and hold the message and choose send as SMS. You don't need to wait 5 minutes. Then the iphone will continue to use SMS for your friend until you both have re-established iMessage communication with Apple.
