yes but what about associating a phone number with the one on the ipad, because less people know my email than my phone number. or if i associate an email with the one on my phone will it pick it up on my ipad when one sends one to my phone number?

But what about iPod touch users? That's why Apps like Whatsapp fall short on; they used Phone Numbers as screen names but Wifi iPads or iPod touches don't have phone numbers.

yeah when I say I want it for ipads I also would include touch users in that too. I think phone numbers are the best way to go because most of the people i would want to chat with would know my phone number not my email

iOS5 user here.

It uses your phone number plus email address and you can add more than one and it doesn't have to be your apple id one or @me.com

Interesting point.

Not too sure how that will work.

My impression of the service is that there's very little choice NOT to use it unless the service isn't currently available.

You can turn the service off completely, but other than that there's not much choice.

I'd rather only use it when my contact doesn't have anything but iMessage (i.e. an iPod touch or iPad user).

well a big issue for someone like me is often times my iPod now days is sitting at home by my bed and in so in range of wifi 24/7 so in terms of iMessaging it would always be connected but I would never be in range of it. It is not like my iPod is close to me very often and I do not look at it for messages.

it is just a consern of mine since my mother, sister and brother are all iPhone users and my dad and I use blackberry and Android phones. We have iPods that are always in range of home wifi so a txt message needs to go to our phones from family members but never to our iPods because we do not use those for communications tools at all.

So If I want to message my wife from my phone while at work, with an iPad at home with her, I best set up one of the iPads with her own account? Currently they're all under mine.

in my case i have my girls iphone, my sisters iphone, and mine under my apple id

So you can message yourself in a sense then? Not sure I understand how it works if iMessage uses the phone # on the iphone and the apple ID on the other devices.

Does anyone wanna test it with me? I haven't actually tried it yet and I don't know anyone in my contacts that is likely to have iOS5

im interested to know how it works,
im currently running iOS5
if you want to try it PM me.
i want to try it with the phone number AND email address
to see the difference. let me know.

what I don't get is that it wants you to enter an email for the iPad, but in the demo they were able to use the same identifier on the iPad as the iPhone. I would like to use my phone number for my iPhone and my iPad because more people know this than my email address. This kind of stinks and means that to use the functionality they mentioned (being able to pick up a convo on diff devices) I will have to use my email address on both devices instead.

if I was to guess at how it works, Id say it binds your phone number to your apple id. it uses that id for everything else anyway, so that makes sense. Then on the iPad, you use the AID, but if people send to your phone number, it will go to both.

I tried to do that but I don't think that it worked. Maybe once we get more iCloud functionality it will work. I'm not expecting everything be perfect on these betas like some of the people do here ;)
