All the threads are too old to dig up (my forum experience in the past there seems to be hatred for 'necro' threads so I'll create a new one):

I know there are great benefits to iMessage, such as security, having the ability to use it on Wifi, no limits like on some SMS plans, having it on all devices, etc...Back in my iOS 6- days, you actually didn't have continuity so you almost had to have iMessage contacts only to even get messages on an iPad or Mac.

But these days SMS 'green' bubbles seem to work over wifi and on all Apple devices, my Mac and iPad, iPod touch and iPhone and Watch all get SMS from the one contact in my life who has an outdated garbage Android (a Kyocera Brigadier), my girlfriend.

Once, i used Facebook Messenger to be able to talk to her via my iPad, etc or any Android devices during my 6 year absence from Apple. Wasn't really fun. But now that continuity/handoff allows SMS across devices why is there so much hatred on threads over 'green bubbles?' It works much the same and most texting is unlimited today. But from reading it's like my days of the Low End Mac forums where they got hostile should you spell 'Mac' as 'mac' or 'MAC' or use 'iTouch' to refer to an 'iPod touch.' People are really touchy!

there's really no real hatred, it's just a meme.

pictures and video send in high quality (great for sexting), you can see delivered or choose the option to let them know you read their text, you can see when someone is typing or drawing and also you can react to a message or send cool effects (ie: someone's birthday, etc). you can't do this natively without iMessage to iMessage.

3rd party apps can get close but it's not native or built-in as soon as you set up your iPhone.

Doesn't really seem like there's much of that happening these days. And when it did/does happen, seems like it's usually just some people who might have some particular issue related to it (perhaps not having an unlimited messaging plan, having some group messaging inconsistencies, or something else along those lines) and/or some people who might do it just for the sake of doing it.

I just finished reading a thread that ended in Aug this year and one of the Apple proponents mentioned 'I won't even talk to anyone who chats with GREEN bubbles' like SMS is the devil or something.

I never really cared for the '... is typing' and 'so and so read your message' indications. One thing i hated most about Facebook Messenger was how it messed up many a conversation. I'd be talking to her and be seeing the icon she's typing but get nothing and assume she ignored me, or my messages would say 'sent' but never show 'delivered' and i'd send it again and again and she'd get a set of three of the same message and so on.

I just love having SMS/texting across devices, something that used to be only possible on iMessage in the past. I'm kinda old fashioned and so i hardly use emoji over emoticons.

I only text person to person. group texts? Is that like those annoying Facebook Messenger message threads you'd get tagged in whether you liked it or not? I'd get a badge and assume it's important and it was just some spam from being tagged in a topic. if that's how group messaging is no thanks.

Maybe it's my use case. Messaging to me is like AIM/MSN Messenger back in the 90s. That's how i'd chat before smartphones were a thing. I use it today in similar fashion as private one-on-one chat. But without the need necessarily for data or wifi. There's little to zero chance anyone I text would use any iMessage specific features such as sending via Apple Pay or using Memoji.

I mean... it's literally just texting more than one person at a time. I think you can imagine use cases. :)

I have separate conversations with different contacts. Are you suggesting i should allow my parents or my boss to view some of the NSFW my girlfriend and me talk about? haha

I don't think you understand how messaging works. Group messaging is not all or nothing. You have group messages with friends or family where applicable and you have individual messages with the same friends and family when applicable, all at the same time. Don't want you boss to see something, don't add him in. Pretty simple really.

You've never gone out or traveled with multiple people that you want to coordinate with? (Let's meet here at 5pm) Or have a couple of friends or family members that you keep in touch with as a group?

I'm guessing not... but it's a pretty common use case, and may explain why you never had a problem with green bubbles.

That's not really how that would work. For example, sine you mentioned parents, it's more like you would talk with both of your parents in the same conversation rather than separate ones (where you would talk about the same type of things with each one separately).

I guess not. I'm not one who really hangs out with other people. Me and my girl sure, but even with family we put the smartphones away and actually talk. The last time i'd even go out with friends was back in High School during football games or such. We didn't have more than Tomagatchis then.

my dad is dead, my stepdad doesn't really text. My mom sends me things like pictures or events that family are planning, my sister sends me info about a club we go to, i get texts from the club President about upcoming meetings, and my girlfriend talks love, my boss updates about work or questions during the off season. That's about it. I am boring, yes, yes i am.

more features, but I think the other reason that people have bad experiences is that group texts with SMS members could act weird / bad.

Exactly. It's painful when everyone isn't on iMessage. I have several iMessage groups but for the ones where there are Android people as well we all just use Hangouts for that group chat instead.

Perhaps it won't ever impact me...I just don't see any benefit to group messaging and even though all my family has iPhones, they don't even know what Animoji or whatever are, don't use Apple Pay yet, and are like me, use emoticons over emoji. To them it's just blue and green bubbles at random.

I wish Lisa, my girl would get an iPhone. She's only had experience with Android, her first smartphone was a Casio G-Zone Commando that ran Android 2.1, and now she's got a rugged Kyocera that is stuck on 5.0 Lollipop. It runs like crap and burns through battery but I bet she'd have a hard time adjusting to anything different just like I couldn't adjust to iOS 7 very well.

Some people prefer red while others prefer blue -- it's down to what someone might need or want, which can be different for different people (without it necessarily being any more right or wrong or good or bad in comparison).

Just the hostility towards 'green' in many threads made me wonder if it were a joke or if they are really that sensitive. Color means nothing to me, but green does look better than blue/grey. I might be remembering incorrectly but i always remembered early iOS having green all the time even during the beginning of iMessage. I've looked up old DYAC funny text fails (remember when iOS used 'Duck' all the time?) and many had green and blue depending on the sender and recipient but i do remember it showing 'iMessage' in the typing area.

Ya, it's not just cosmetic. it was due to functionality issues:

Just seems touchy and overeactive to me. Also I just don't need group messaging. Every text from any contact is specific and for one-on-one. Otherwise we just call each other. I understand the sentiment over Android but still.

The ones I have dislike for more are the ones in charge of the system. With how long it's been around, why can't it just do iMessaging for the iMessage people and SMS for the Greenies within a group message already? Why does the thread have to be tainted just because there's even one Greenie???

why does one color matter so much? I heard you can't even group text (i can't even see the need for it so it doesn't really matter for myself) but now it seems you can but folks are acting elitest and judging over green? seriously? What color dare i ask, did folks using a BlackBerry have? Green hate seems to refer to Android, but were colors OS dependent or SMS/iMessage dependent?

I don't judge anyone for color of skin much less color of texts if functions remain the same. It's the hostility over spelling Mac as MAC all over again.

Some will do it, most won't. Just because some are making some sort of extreme type of statements it doesn't mean that it applies to the majority, let alone most/everyone.

I hoped it was just a meme or joke. But i'm reading stuff posted here and in links that suggest that people really are touchy over a color of a text message. There's just far more important things to be angry about than a simple color.

While sure, at one time before Continuity or Handoff existed to use texting across all your devices you HAD to use iMessage, but today SMS and iMessage appear to work the same. across all my Apple devices (not across Android stuff, but that's Android being Android) and over wifi just fine. all the advantages just seem to no longer matter these days. I might be feeling different if the fonts were different or there were colors offered like FB Messenger does (a rainbow text thread now there's something awful looking or perhaps Comic Sans? Papyrus?) but green or blue, purple or grey, ain't gonna ruin my day.

Part of it is that it's certainly more than the color (and the color itself not really having much to do with it) for many. And for the few that it is somehow about color and just that then it really is more along the lines of a meme and not much more.
