A question re: SMS and iMessage (I posted this in the 5.0 forum but not much traffic there)

I had 5.0 GM loaded on my iPhone 4 so I had connected to iCloud, etc. last week. I sold my 4 and went to a 3G and am running whatever the best it can run is (4.3.5?).

Anyways, wife and mom and both running 5.0 now on their 4 and 4s respectively. For some reason my texts are showing up on their phones as my number ( like 1+(XXX) XXX-XXXX) in the text message log but when you click on that it brings my name up at the top. I confirmed that my name and correct phone number is stored in their Contacts.

Anyone know why this is?

Also, is there a setting as you are typing an iMessage or Text to toggle between the two? The best solution I have found is to just send the iMessage and then touch the sent message and then touch "Send as Text Message".

Here's my issue

My girlfriend and I both have iPhones and iOS 5 so we've been trying out iMessage and it's really good :)

However, I work for a telco and have to regularly test other handsets and if my sim is in another phone, and she tries to send a message to me (using my phone number) her iPhone automatically uses iMessage but of course I never get it and she doesn't have a way to send me a standard SMS without fully turning off iMessage.

Any ideas?

Nevermind Sigh. I don't see how you dont get it. Ima make it EVEN EASIER for you to understand.

Text someone...

Is it blue? its iMessage yay!

Is it green? its a text message (normal text message).

It will chose iMessage if possible AUTOMATICALLY....

Mate you don't understand what he's saying - if a person has 2 devices, say a Nokia E63 and an iPad, which one does it send to automatically? It doesn't send to both, and so you risk a chance of them not seeing the message because it's on the incorrect device.

However, I think I have an answer - if you create a message to their phone number, it sends as a text, and conversely for their other device. This creates 2 message threads in the messaging app. It would be great if they could identify which is which, however.

This makes no sense either. Why would iMessage (and APPLE thing with iOS 5) work with Nokia? I said in MANY posts that they both must have iOS 5 and iMessage turned on. So if they are on something that cannot run iOS 5 ... it will send a TXT MSG.

Sigh. I never knew something that was completely automatic would be hard .. holy crap.

I must be missing the point. If you have unlimited texting what is the advantage of imessage unless you're doing it to someone's iPad?

Speed, can work over wifi (I was using it last night from a plane), delivery notification, read notification... and as you said. I can use my iPad/iphone to continue the same conversation

The issue is one of his contacts has two devices: 1 Apple, and 1 non-apple. He's finding when he wants to text the non-apple device, iOS is choosing to iMessage the apple device instead.

Seems the work around would be to type the number directly, rather than typing said person's name.

I've been reading this and I think you are thinking too hard about it. It's really really really as simple as this:

1) you start typing a text to someone... JUST LIKE YOU USED TO. You do nothing different.

2) as you start typing, the phone AUTOMATICALLY checks with apple to see if the person you are texting has an iOS5 device with iMessage turned on.

3) if they do, the system will AUTOMATICALLY send it as an iMessage. You will know it's an iMessage because the "send" button turns blue and the message bubbles turn blue.

Both parties need to have a device running iOS5, and iMessage has to be turned on on both devices. So anything that can run iOS5 can use iMessage (so, yes, iPhone 4, 4s, 3gs, iPad, iPad2).

Also, if they have two iOS5 devices - for example an iPhone and an iPad, sending the text message to the email address they registered with iMessage will make the message go to BOTH devices at the same time (so they can reply from either). If you send it to their phone number it will only go to their phone.

Ideally, Apple will add a way to let an iPod or iPad be associated with a phone number so sending to a phone number will work either way.

Are you less angry now?

Check that you've activated it in Settings > Messages

touch

it can also now be used to reach the near 35 MILLION ipod touch gen 4 out there. And, I am sure that apple is going to integrate this into ichat (or something similar) into the OS/Browser/all of the above.

but we dont know all 35 million..

the advantage as i get it is if dont have unlim texts it dont count against plan.. and u can see when ther other person is typing

International

One of the questions I DO have is what happens when there is NO DATA connection, will an imessage sent to me, automatically go out over SMS?

Many people text me of course and when I am international I GET those TEXTS/SMS for free of course. But, if they were sending me what was historically an imessage thread, but now I am only able to get TEXTS and not something coming over the data pipe, will THEIR message now go out as a true SMS or will it get stuck, till I get back into data coverage?

Well, I didn't mean you would try to communicate with all 35 Million, just that many people know SOMEONE who has a touch, or people with a touch would like to use it in such a way, to get texts - where historically they could not.

Also, I am finding that imessage is VERY VERY fast.

But over 90% of the time people with iPod touches aren't near wifi access points...

And yes, they could get texts; there are plenty of free apps that people use to send / receive texts.
But again, people aren't always near wifi..

my take on iMessage

ok, after reading several reviews, many people are comparing iMessage to BBM. Clearly not the same, for instance the BBM works or a separate frequency than txt like i message however bbm has its own app and user friendly to groups as opposed to just individuals. iMessage works within the txt msg app which can be a bit confusing at times and really is only good for those using wifi like ipads/ipods and such so not really an advantage to iPhone users. Personally I dont think it is all that much of an innovation for people with iPhones but perhaps without infringing on any copyrights, Apple would institute a separate app for iMessage.

does imessage use up your data? doesnt use part of your 200mg of data if your on wifi, right?
katz

on yur phone?

i was told use phone # if text/imessage to phone.
use email if going to ipad

seriously? if you have a iphone and ipad it will go to both

when you go to settings you can choose different ways to have people contact you. the person a few posts above has 8 dif emails to receive imessages.
