seriously? if you have a iphone and ipad it will go to both

when you go to settings you can choose different ways to have people contact you. the person a few posts above has 8 dif emails to receive imessages.

if you have an iPhone iMessage should use your phone#, if you are using the iPad/iPod, the iMessage should go to your apple ID or email address. no need to have 8 different emails, but on another note why would any one person have more than an iPhone + iPad or iPod? like whats the point of having all three if thats the case above?

i understand how this works just fine i have been using it since beta1
look at settings>messages>"receive at" you can put in however many you want just like the person on the last page pointed out. then you can give out either your phone number or email address to someone with ios5 and you will receive it as a imessage. or you can add another a third email so you don't have to give out your main info and someone an contact you that way.

re the 8.

A few of them are just test/throw-away addresses specifically for iMessage during the betas, the others are AppleID, Personal Email, club email, work email, etc.

I know

But over 90% of the time people with iPod touches aren't near wifi access points...

And yes, they could get texts; there are plenty of free apps that people use to send / receive texts.
But again, people aren't always near wifi..

I know, there are plenty of free text apps so it is very possible for one to do it with an ipad or ipod touch, but imessage is integrated into the os. Apples own research shows that only 10% of ipod touch users had ever downloaded an app.

I understand how iMessage works, however, when I use iMessage with someone who has an iPhone 4s, it shows their phone number instead of their name at the top after the message has sent.. is this happening to anybody else? And how do I get it to show the person's name instead of the number?
Thanks

definitely not happening to me.

double check the person you're receiving an iMessage from is in your Contacts list.

if it shows a phone number or a email address that means the caller id they are using isn't in your contacts.

This is exactly what me and a few buddies of mine are experiencing. I tried re-adding the number to the contacts, but it still shows up as their phone number and not their name. It makes it very confusing in this day and age of storing and forgetting someone's number. :)

OK...I added their numbers again to contacts and restarted the phone. Now they show up as their name as it's listed in contacts. This is on iMessage.

My husband and I both have the iPhone 4 and updated the software. I also noticed that when I texted (iMessaged) him from MY phone it comes up as getting a message from HIS own phone number and not mine. Then sometimes it would go thru as my number and not show my name. It was weird.

So I deleted all the messages and rebooted the phones. Seems to work fine now. Goofy though.

One thing I'm not thrilled with is...when I send a message to my husband (iPhone to iPhone) the thread of conversation comes up on the iPad even though the conversation was never started on it. My kids play on the iPad and well ya know..that may not be good for them to read that stuff ;) So I'll have to turn messaging off on the iPad for now. Which really isn't too bad. Just something I noticed.

bug

I have found what appears to be a bug.

IF you are in the messaging app and VIEWING an sms, if ANOTHER imessage message comes in, there is an alert tone, but NO pop-up and NO banner message that comes up.

ugh .. but how is it auto matic if i need to use one for their ipad and theirt # for other stuff?

i'm starting to get so frustrated.. of course would prolly be better if i had ios 5 on my phone.. (long story).. can i install it on a 4 thats not activated?

You don't HAVE to use separate ones for iPad and iPhone, it depends how they have everything set up.

I chose to use just email for iPad and just phone number for iPhone as I want to keep the 2 separate. If you use email for both it will sync all conversations to both devices.

I don't think it's a bug, it has never shown text notifications when in the messages app. When viewing a message if you look at the arrow at the top left it will say (1) next to Messages if you have a new unread text.

Change settings on your phones to only receive iMessages to your phone number, or maybe use a different email address on the iPad and they won't sync.
