I didn't think that a G4 would be fast enough to scrub HD so not supporting G4's isn't a surprise.

I have a feeling in the next update they'll incorporate some missing key features from iMovie '06 into the next version. In order to make it still easy to use they may do something similar to Pages where there are two different modes (1 for iMovie '08 ease of use and 1 for iMovie '06 editing).

Personally, I think iMovie '08 is absolutely perfect for most users. They've fixed all the glaring problems I had with iMovie '06 (too complicated and time consuming) and made, what I consider to be, the most efficient and easiest way to slap some clips together in no time. That's exactly what I've always wanted and I'm really impressed that they've listened.

Far from all the FCP/E conspiracy theories, I think Apple just hasn't had the time to 'finish coding' (if you will) the -new- iMovie. If Jobs' story is to be believed, then you have to consider that iMovie HD 6 has gone through 6 major versions, while iMovie '08 has only had 1.

(For the conspiracy theorists: Why would Apple archive iMovie HD 6 when you install iMovie '08, and allow iLife '08 buyers to re-download iMovie HD 6 if they were trying to push us to buy FCP/E?)

I think if we wait a bit more Apple will eventually bring the new iMovie back up feature-wise to the likes of iMovie HD 6, hopefully with even better ease-of-use. Until then, we have iMovie HD 6, and 'iMovie Express' :D

Not even necessary, just comment out or delete about 9 lines from a certain file in the .pkg directory and it will ignore the check. Since this is bypassing protection, I won't bother to post exact instructions. You don't even need to know how the Installer package system works, just blindly sleuth around and you'll see it in plain daylight. Just need to know how to right-click and also use a text editor's "Find" feature.

Both methods would work, though as the check is done at install-time. There is no time bomb in the app itself. Personally I like receipts to be installed and so would prefer the installer to do its pre/postflight stuff.

although this bypasses the install check, there is a further check on launching iMovie08 on a g4, which will advise you its not supported.
I checked this by opening iMovie08 on a g4, over the network to my MBP.

i have iLife 08 ordered. if i install iLife 08 will it keep the old iMovie HD or will it install over it?
also, if it installs over it can I installed iMovie HD back on the machine and not replace iMovie 08?

The instructions refer to installing iMovie HD 6 (from the download link) without having the prerequisite iLife 08 installed. Rather than installing iMovie 08 on a G4.

As far as I know your original iLife 06 folder will be left intact in your Applications.

Another: decompress archive.pax in the iMovie HD 6 package.

iMovie '08 won't run on any G4 Mac. I guess Apple is giving you another option to get iMovie '06 in case you deleted it or are buying iLife for the first time.

The requirements also exclude Rev A iMac G5s as those were 1.6/1.8GHz machines. The iMovie specs say a 1.9GHz is the minimum requirement. I'm going to install on my 1.8GHz G5 and see what happens.

workign for free

i have an old ibook g4...if anyone wants to help me on my way to a new mac

anyway anyone wanting to use this for free with out buying ilife '08 can download this and install using pacifist this opens up the packages and installs it and it works fine! maybe a little slow on ibook

so whats the verdict on iMovie 8 ? i've been reading about the timeline issue and sound levels on the apple site and some people are just plain angry that the app has been turned into a nice looking windows movie maker-

on the other hand i've still yet to buy the iLife 8 suite - for me this is the first time in many years i have not bought as soon as it hit the apple store.

i know there is always iMovie 6 but hell we've been waiting for over 7 months for this release.

I don't know.

Maybe because it's literally the least they could do to prevent iMovie users from going ape-**** crazy because the program has been crippled?

But I am worried that "classic" iMovie may end up as "abandonware" before too long. I really hope that by the next version of iLife ('09? '10?), they've figured out how to incorporate the power of iMovie '06 into the sexiness of iMovie '08.
Agreed. Apple, either please continue development/support for iMovie '06, or find a way to incorporate both the old and new workflows into iMovie '08. The new clip-based editing paradigm in '08 seems cool on the surface, but that could remain as a "wizard" mode for the less experienced. Bring the true timeline editing and detailed audio controls into an "expert" mode in '08.

I do use Final Cut Pro for more detailed projects, but iMovie still has its place for banging out quick simple edits for visual storyboarding or whatever (but still needing just a little more than iM '08 but less than FCP or FCE). I have used iM and FCP side by side a lot in the past. Just one man's humble opinion and workflow.

I love using iMovie 06.

I don't quite get what the great thing about iMovie 08 is?

It's basically instead of storing clips for only one project at a time, you store all your video clips in iMovie?

The thing is that for me, I'll connect my video-cam, import the video to iMovie, work on the project. Then burn the project to a DVD and erase it off the hard disk. I don't have enough room to keep all my DV video on the computer.

Is that the intention with this? That you would store all your raw DV footage in addition to projects you make on your HD? To me that seems like something a high-end user would need, which is odd as they have made (apparently from what I can tell) the editing features less high end.:confused::confused:

Hoping this is the case. Anyone know for sure? I have my version of '08 sitting at home waiting, but I also have two projects I'm in the middle of with '06. I dying to install '08 so I can properly use my new AVCHD cam, but I really need to finish the two existing projects.

I find it so sad that the new iMovie doesn't work on G4s. But I wouldn't have enough disk space anyway.
