Video FX

Does anyone know where the Video FX options are in iMovie 08?

If that's one of the missing features it really really sucks!

Apple now appears to be offering iMovie '06 for download to iLife '08 customers. Personally I think this is very good news... and perhaps worthy of a page 1 mention considering the disillusionment expressed by many iMovie veterans at iMovie '08.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html

I've already got iLife '06 so obviously I won't be needing this. And I don't have iLife '08 (yet). But I am curious to know...
  1. How well does iMovie '06 integrate with iLife '08 (and vice-versa)?
  2. Technically, can anyone install this? Or, do you have to have installed a retail copy of iLife '08? How about new Mac users who got iLife '08 bundled with their system? Or, will it only install if your Mac is below the system requirements for iMovie '08?

Cheers
SL

Interestingly enough, I have bought a brand new 20 inch 2.4 Imac with Ilife 08 pre-installed and all the Ilife apps are 08 but Imovie stayed at 06 HD. Go figure.

iMovie '08 is cool, but I'm very accustomed to the classic timeline view. When I get my iMac, I'll definitely have both iMovie 06 and 08 installed.

I think an "express" mode and an "expert" mode would be great. Case in point, last night, I shot a 2-minute video of my son on our digital camera. I stuck it in my PC (don't have a mac yet). I didn't need anything with high production values, and I was thinking how awesome and quick using iMovie '08 would have been, I just wanted a 20 second clip to send off to the in-laws. Of course, posting it on .Mac would have been really awesome, too.

In any case, though, when I get my Mac, I really want to get FCE to do some higher-end stuff, but I like that I could continue to use iMovie '08 for things like what I had to do (unfortunately, I did have to use Windows Movie Maker **shudders**) and use FCE (and maybe iMove 6 HD) to document a vacation or something.

iMovie 6.0.3 vs 6.0.4

Strange, I have the last revision of the MBP (right before SR update) and I have iMovie 6.0.3 installed (came with my new Mac).

The download is for version 6.0.4. Anyone know where the release notes are? Wonder why Mac OS X Software Updates doesn't pickup new version to install.

I'm pretty sure 6.0.4 is the same as 6.0.3, with the only change the check that iLife 08 is installed on your system as part of the installation package. So there is no point in updating 6.0.3, hence Software Update doesn't pick it up.

thanks lukechip, saves me from wasting time downloading.

Not having a send to idvd option also really pissed me off. What was apple thinking? I thought they wanted to make everything easier.

No G4 support.

Good to know this, I was about to fork out for iLife 08, but I only have G4 machines (poor me :) , haven't been able to save up enough lately to upgrade to an Intel based, or even a G5 model that came in between....)

Which other apps do not support the G4 anymore??

I can't believe it, after so many years of solid performing use, my beloved G4 macs are showing their first signs of age due to new software.....

I know that my Macs are not the fastest, but it is a testimony to Apple's designs that they were build for the future. I mean, wireless (g), Firewire 800, gigabit ethernet, bluetooth, and running OSX 10.4.10 , on machines that are over 4 years old now....:apple:

Then again, I still have an old Mac Classic, that is in perfect working order, which I turn on every now and then for pure nostalgic reasons (OS 7, old "beep" start up chime and all ha ha)

imovie vs imovie - the gloves are off!

Reading through the comments on this forum and catching up on other mac websites it sounds like Apple have 1. Maybe made an error of judgement
or 2. Actually created a new iLife application that should be called iVacvids or something similar.

Like a number of others on the forum I also use iMovie 06 alongside Final Cut and reckon that a lot of the time I can get away with just editing with iMovie as it is such a user friendly and powerful tool. Final Cut (Express or Pro version) is actually a big step up and quite a steep learning curve from iMovie.

It remains to be seen with all the hype around the 'new' iMovie and the possibility of a seperate download of iMovie 6 (.0 whatever) if Apple will realise their mistake and do an upgrade/combination of the 2 or just develop them seperately.

I'll be buying iLife 08 and saving my current version of iMovie 06 to a seperate hard drive until I've had a chance to play with the new version - but no timeline and fewer transitions/effects, what were they thinking of !!?? :apple:

i really love imovie '08 due to it's very easy working, but still like like imovie HD 6 because of better audio controls, couldn't i just make a movie in iMovie '08 without the music, and save it , import into imovie '06 and add audio and maybe some transition effects??

I fear that they want to foruce us semi serious home movie makers to fork out for FC Express, which is a big step up. I recommend Apple to my friends based on the fact that for a little more $$ than a PC, you get a decent computer with all the trimmings, plus an OS and a great set of apps for video editing. To get the same on PC would cost more, and not work as well. However, with iMovie 08 (or is that iMovie oh-no !), now I'm not so sure.

I thought the same thing. Now Final Cut can only be purchsed as part of Final Cut Studio leaving Final Cut Express as the only standalone alternative. I think Apple is targeting iMovie 08 at people who want to quickly and easily make 5-minute movies out of clips they shot with their digital cameras.

I think FCE will emerge as the editor of choice for the midlevel crowd.

If you get a new Mac that comes with the iLife '08 DVD (but '06 is still pre-installed, so not an iMac but a Mac Pro, MacBook or MBP), when you install the iLife '08 DVD, it automatically keeps iMovie 6HD in a separate folder under applications called "iMovie (previous version)" - I'd assume that on system pre-loaded with iLife '08, they are also preloaded with iMovie 6 HD.

iMovie and the G4 Blues

iMovie '08 won't run on any G4 Mac.

Okay, let's see if I got this right: I just downloaded the free iMovie '06 HD from Apple. But of course it won't actually install unless I install iMovie '08 first. BUT, of course, THAT won't install on a G4! Tried Text Edit to "search out and destroy" that 9 lines of code but THAT can't open iMovie! So what's next for me (and many others, I'm sure). Don't tell me to buy an Intel-i-Mac now, as I have just tricked out this baby with big AV hard drives, a 2 GHz processor and the full complement of memory!!!! Damn----and Help!

This is wrong, just so totally totally wrong. Apple have rewritten iMovie for a reason. If everyone wasn't whining and complaining so much Apple wouldn't be offering version 6 anymore.

I have version 6. But I've never used it. But I shall remove it from my hard drive now and I shan't be including it in any reinstall I ever do (which I probably won't have to do because my computer is from :apple:).

If I need that level of editing functionality I shall buy FCP and I encourage you all to do the same.

If you've installed iLife '08 on your G4, it won't install iMovie. But it will take the .dmg download of iMovie '06 and recognize it. I just did it last night.

I'm glad they left us this option for those who like the timeline still. Thanks Apple!

...and the themes, and the effects, and the transitions.

iMovie 08 has to be one of Apple's biggest software blunders in recent times.

It's purpose is purely for edible garbage, suitable for YouTube folk.

How to get iMovie 06? Adjusting playback speed and rotating video clips.

Hi, I am trying to change the playback speed of some video clips in iMovie 08, and I'd like to rotate another video 90 degrees – things that you used to be able to do easily in previous versions of iMovie. Argh.

I've read several posts on this forum that suggest and link to a download of iMovie 6 that enables you to make those edits. None of the downloads work with my system, OS 10.5.8. It says I need the previous version, and I've tried to the earliest versions I can find.

Do you need to buy iLife 08 in order to use previous versions of iMovie?

Are there other applications that enable you to slow down or speed up clips, or rotate them?

I've done quite a bit of digging without luck.

Thank you in advance!
