I keep a shuffle in my car for music and every few weeks have to take it in for a charge. Today, of course, I forgot to take it off the dock and was running late so no time to run back in to grab it. Oh well ... no music for me so I can support Apple's "courage."
Mine's connected to the end of my headphones where it stays. Not really sure why you'd ever take it off and leave it at home. If I needed one in my car, I'd buy another one, because they're only $9. Not really following why this is an issue.
Not really following this. Unless you are also changing your music playlist, why not have a charger in the car? And if you're using your shuffle for music, are you saying your iPhone is a backup to the Shuffle? In which case, if this happens a lot, maybe buy a $9 adapter for the car, and just use your iPhone for all your audio, or at least always have a functional backup for your situation. My car has BT and USB, so that would not really ever be an issue even if I did use a shuffle like you are, but for $9 it's an easily solvable problem. And I have to ask, is there no radio in the car to give you music in such situations? I have to say that a few years ago when I had an aux jack, sometimes when I got in the car, I just listened to the radio because it was just easier than plugging two cables into my iPhone, especially for a short trip.
So far the only impact I see from the headphone jack being removed is that they're sold out everywhere.
I have the new Square chip card reader which is great for customers that have the chip. I still have a small amount of customers that don't have chipped cards still, and gift card users don't have chip and I have to key these cards in by hand and eat the larger cost 
So I brought my 7 plus and headphones to work but brought my iPad Air. Can't use the headphones lol
"Sold out" doesn't mean anything without knowing how many phones were available at release, which Apple already said they won't disclose for the first time I can ever remember. An iPhone release wouldn't be an iPhone release without selling out. It would hurt their brand. I think the 7 is more popular than they expected, but I think they expected it to be the worst selling iPhone in quite a while.
I do a bit of music recording on my iPhone, and came from the high end world of recording, and extra latency really messes with you. Can't see the AirPods being any good for monitoring, even casually. Games, I can't deal with the delay of Airplay, so who knows how that will work.
Does Apple or Beats published the specs on latency with their W1 chipped headphones?
I'm surprised we haven't heard anything yet in terms of reviews of the Solo 3. EDIT: I see latency is still an issue from a 9 to 5 Mac review. If that's true for all W1 chipped headphones, then this is clearly not the solution Apple purports it to be.
I guess the answer is, when watching a movie or recording, to plug them in via Lightning.
I'm experiencing this issue too with a set of Bose. Have to unplug them from the phone and plug them back in again. Not impossible, but extremely annoying.
Only iPhone 7 plus is sold out due to Apple miscalculating the demand (they produced way more iPhone 7 models). iPhone 7 (which BTW is a more popular model) is easily available. So, perhaps, jack removal is having a negative impact? We'll know eventually.
Cool... since I last posted in this thread, the Lightning jack on my iPhone 6 has become super finicky. I have to wiggle the plug to get it to charge (tried different cables).
My friend's iPhone 6 is way worse. His cable just falls out of the phone.
It's like these phones self-destruct after 2 years. My iPhone 5 had the power button break around the time the 6 came out.
Don't like the idea of putting more stress on the jack, especially in a pants pocket with headphones.

Funny thing, my 6 started doing that since last week. It's hard to find the right position for it to charge, and sometimes my phone doesn't even charge (especially over-night), and then I wake up, and realise that my phone is on 10%, and it's meant to last me all day. :/
They have redesigned the Lightning port, so hopefully it is much more robust than previous phones in order to handle the regular plugging and unplugging of the headphones.
What's needed is a low-profile, right-angle Lightning passthrough that works with audio. That will reduce the likelihood of pressure being put on the end of the connector.
I was having the exact same trouble with the lightning port on my iPhone 6. However, I managed to fix it by removing the build up of lint and fluff that had collected at the bottom of the lightning port.
This, this has happened to me before. More often with my 5 than 6 but once I cleaned it the port worked normally.
1) Buy a bluetooth headset. But to get the latest W1 chip technology, you're only choice until late October is to buy the Beats Solo3 for $300. They provide 40 hours of playback on a single 3 hour charge, and up to 3 hours playback on a 5 minute charge.
2) Buy a $20 Bluetooth 4.2 adapter to plug your current headphones into, with a 10-hour playtime. For $40 you could buy two and charge one while using the other. Or, just plug it in an recharge it while you use the one.
3) Buy a $50 Apple Lightning dock with a 3.5mm output.
4) Buy the $40 Belkin charger/audio splitter. But that won't be available until some time in October.
And that's about it.
Thought: and this is totally a thought experiment, but I wonder if a $40 Apple USB 3 Camera Adapter would work, if you plugged a USB-to-USB cable into the adapter and charging port, and plugged the Lightning headphone adapter into the Lightning pass-through port on the adapter? Alternatively the $50 Lightning HDMI adapter might be compatible with a HDMI to VGA adapter with the 3.5mm headphone jack, but that seems more convoluted than it needs to be.

I do a lot of travel and also cross the pond.
1. Charge up before leaving, to 100% capacity. My phone routinely lasts over a day so it shouldn't be a problem, especially considering that there are a couple of times when the phone can't be on.
2. Listen to music in the plane.
3. If battery drops make the decision of what is more important, music or charging.
4. Alternatively, take a nap and charge.
5. Carry a book.
6. Get a Y cord.
7. Get a BT device.
8. Buy another brand.
SO many choices.
SO many sacrifices to make. I guess adapter would be the best choice for me considering i already spent heft amount on sennheiser hd 800. Any idea when Belkin charger/audio adapter is coming out in October? I'm leaving to Korean and Germany on Oct 14th.

2011 Chevy Equinox, despite having fairly good tech integration, doesn't do audio over bluetooth and something wonky with the car's media software has made the iPod integration with my iPhones work haphazardly at best (been having this issue since the iPhone 4 days). Why they've never been able to fix it is another issue, but generally I've come to terms with the fact its easier to just use the aux jack than fool with it. But playing music and using GPS at the same time without being plugged in is a battery killer and I'm finding myself having to choose between powering up or listening in the past week.
Will probably have to bite the bullet for that expensive Belkin adapter when it comes out unless a better solution presents itself.
