iphone 5 wont have the death grip issue but it wont get as good reception as the iphone 4. Thats the tradeoff, antenna exposed so you can get great signal most of the time in more places, or old school antenna so you can get mediocre signal all the time, even when holding it like a dork

It's a myth that an external antenna like the one on the iPhone 4 is superior to a well designed internal antenna. I've owned over thirty different phones over the last four years. Needless to say they've each had different antenna arrangements. Many of these have performed flawlessly as a phone. It's not rocket science.*

Thursday morning I bought a new Droid X. It has an internal antenna that performs extremely well. I could not be happier.*

I'm pretty confident that there will be a silent redesigm/correction in the phones shipped post 30 September. Too bad for the people who bought already, they'll get the free bumper/case.

Not like it would be a first time Apple has done that, you just have to look at the Macbook/MBP line to know that. :D

I'll definitely pick up mine after the 30 September switchover, my 3GS will do fine till then! ;)

If they come up with a fix, it will be fix them all or no fix at all. With so much media coverage over the issue, the media will truly be on apples case if they find out that they won't fix the older iphones when the new ones are fixed.

If I had to guess as to the significance of the date, I would guess that they're seeing how production of bumpers is looking at that point. If it's nearing 1:1 with iPhone production rates, they might just change the packaging and include it in the box. They wouldn't want to say this now as they might not know if they can reach that capacity before they find out how many current users will take them up on the offer for a free one.

Edit: D'oh. michael31986 beat me to this guess.

They could also be looking at introducing a protective film to the manufacturing process that would negate the need for a bumper after that date. After all, one of their Q/A answers to an unrelated topic was that they in general don't like to mention upcoming products/refreshes/changes because it has a negative effect on current model sales.

I'm not sure how long FCC approval takes, but another (very unlikely) guess would be that they might have a new band with the weak spot located somewhere less likely to be touched during use in the pipeline for approval. I wouldn't imagine retooling to move the break would take all that terribly long provided the internal layout isn't overly dependent on connections to external components being exactly where they currently are.

It's all really just speculation until they actually announce something.

sorry there is about as much likely hood of them doing a sept 30th redesign as there was them doing a total recall. (read no chance).

Sep. 30 = bumpers 'included' with the iPhone 4 box. Right now they just don't have enough.

Those would essentially be the same exact thing after all. Yeah not gonna happen.

I think they're going to wait and see if anyone even remembers this by then.

September 30th is the end of Q3

they were not about to promise free cases 'forever' so they chose a logical date and said, "we'll will see what happens when it gets closer to september 30th"

chances are we won't see a hardware fix because that would issue its own kind of recall to the early adopters and such

+1 they're containing their losses to Q3 so it doesn't affect Q4 numbers... Nothing to do with a hardware fix imo...

There won't be a hardware fix. In fact, i would venture to say that the iphone 5 will have the exact same design because steve is arrogant like that.

.
Absolutely. One of these two scenarios is going to happen, that's obvious.

The reason for the date announced at the press conference is nothing more than an evasive tactic on Apple's part. Steve Jobs is a master puppeteer. He knows his audience well, by leaving it open ended he leaves it to each individuals interpretation, eliminating any backlash as a result of a final word. He's floating a trial balloon to see how it plays back in the press and public arenas in the days that follow.*

Now he has time to carefully craft his next move, if any. In the event that some natural disaster or other significant news event develops, the heat is off. If not, and if pressed harder by media, or a modest drop In sales, Apple will have the latitude to act in it's usual minimalist ways. Given the attention this issue is receiving at this juncture, I don't see a "fix" of any significance on the horizon. I believe it's far more likely that Apple will wait for the next product cycle for that. Just like they've been firm, no recall, they will not make changes to phones built after 9.30.2010

It is nothing more than a tangible deadline guided by Apple's quarterly financial statement.

I highly doubt Apple will do a single thing. Obviously they are not that concerned with the problem. Their statistics work in their favor.

I think the 30th is just a date to see if it blows over or not. If not, they will continue bumpers.

No.

As someone else told me today, people here overparse everything too much. They take everything Apple says and then add all kinds of extra and non-intended meaning into it.

It is absurd. The date is nothing but a date they can set so they can potentially see how things go down the line. It does not mean ANYTHING is planned to happen at that time. Anyone who is making any decisions based on something happen then, should be poked with a sharp hot stick.

I like...being poked... with a sharp..hot..stick. ;)
