I was flirting with the idea of buying an iPhone XR for a family member but after watching some YouTube videos I’m having serious doubts.

If you look at the competition (such as the Galaxy S10e), is the iPhone XR quickly starting to feel like a relic of the past in some ways given its premium price?

No 1080p screen for a large 6.1 inch display being a huge sticking point for 2019

The screen looks great in person that’s all that matters.

Just reading specs is pointless.

Well if you look at it from that angle then pretty much any smartphones screen “looks great”

Mainly bc, if you ask me, the screens aren’t that big to begin with.

But if you compare it to the competition, has the hardware fallen behind?

Do you think consumers think like this? Given, it could be priced maybe somewhat cheaper, it’s still really competitive against the XS in terms of what is offering with features. Especially right now with trade-ins and promotions, the XR can be found much cheaper than $750.00

I see this point being made regularly, and let me ask you, how many consumers even know what a 1080 P display is? Do they even know the difference between LCD an OLED? For the majority, they do not. I think they see a new form factor, Face ID and they choose the color/storage they want. Average customers don’t generally care about the resolution.

The hardware is only one part of the equation. Is this relative invested in iOS (paid for apps they use fairly frequently or uses iMessage or FaceTime a lot for example) or not? If not, sure, the S10e (on paper) kicks the XR's butt. If they're a casual user of their phone, then they will never push either phone to their limits, so it doesn't matter. You're just buying grandpa (never speeds) a Porsche when a Camry would do.

The screen looks great on the XR. My kid has one. I have a XS Max and in terms of usability I’d be just as happy with the XR as I am with my Max.

Specs are overrated in many cases.

Outdated for who?
Youtubers change their phones whenever a new phone is released, and they get phones for free from the manufacturers. So I wouldn't take their choice at face value.

The Galaxy S10e will be supported only for 2 years, maybe 3 years max. The iPhone XR will be supported for at least 5 years, if not longer. It will be up to you to judge what is the better value for you.

iOS is definitely better IMO if you ask me. Kind of a main reason why I use iOS.

Well then you are at the mercy of Apple. Apple will never be first to market with any new tech. That’s just how it is.

Actually, I would say it’s vice versa-Apple is at the mercy of the consumer, especially given the higher price points for smart phones today, Apple relies on them to want to upgrade to their latest devices at these inflated prices, more specifically, the XS.

It is stupid for me to stand in defense of the XR, because all it took for me was one good look at it in the store, and I went for XS Max without any doubt.

But I do not think it is outdated, in terms it is obsolete. It is a mid range device, it is fine where it's at.

All in all, that's all from me, Apple, see you again somewhere in 2020-2021...

Think it will probably gain a fair bit of traction from this September if it's given a $100 price cut, it'll be an attractive option at $649. That's the only issue I can see now, it's not the flagship iPhone but it's priced at what flagship iphones have traditionally been priced at.

There are no more flagships at $700, except the Xiaomi, whose business model allows for affordable such prices.
