Do men who decide to grow beards actually worry about what they wear with it? Seems lame to me but hey, I think facial hair of any kind sucks anyway. I think a clean shaven man is best but if you must, I say buy one of those denim jackets with the fake sheep fur in the collar.

I just started growing a beard too - I had a goatee before but now going for a full beard.

I feel more intense with a beard. How can you go wrong with that?

In what situations does a beard look good?

On the chin is usually best.

Nah, facial hair goes with just about anything providing you keep it tidy. It's the ones that don't keep it properly shaped and trimmed that need to dress like rejects from Brokeback Mountain.

I love a nice beard in general, and am fond of the even, trimmed all-over beard type. I think it makes men look more friendly. :)

As for what to wear with a beard, I don't think anything different to what you'd usually wear, really. Woolly jumpers look nice with beards, but I think it's because it's a nice all-over fuzzy beardy goodness. :D

When does a beard look good?

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER.

A perfect shave is the best look for a man.

That is an opinion. I know plenty of women who will disagree with you. Heck most of them say I look pretty good with my gottee yes even ones who hate facial hair have said I look better with it.

I think as long as it is kept trim it looks good with about anything.

I've never found beards attractive. Even the most neatly trimmed beard makes you appear a little unkempt. Goatees are fine though, and suit some guys very well.

But sometimes a beard can make an otherwise unattractive man much sexier looking:

Even females can sometimes benefit from a nicely trimmed beard.

My wife prefers me with my goatee and forbade me to shave it before our wedding. I know part of it is that she's slightly older than me and the goatee makes me look older than her, even though I still look older than her without it, I look about 5 years younger when I'm clean shaven.

We've been married for 5 years and other than the honeymoon I think I've only shaved the goatee off once and I think that was just a really short trim after an unintended trimmer setting accident.

I'd do a full beard if I could, however I suffer from the patchy cheek syndrome, given enough time and effort I might be able to pull off a beard (although doubtful), I've just never had that length of time off of work when I can avoid the public eye while it goes through the crappy looking phase. Unfortunately my neck under my goatee grows very well, I need to figure out how to get that stubble to fill in the patches on my cheeks and I'd be golden...

I will eventually shave it someday (probably because of a stupid bet), but since it's been years since I've seen my chin, I'm a bit scared of what I might find....

I don't care for beards or facial hair, with the exception of eyebrows and reasonable-length sideburns. Most of the people I've seen with beards just don't look good with them.

For those considering beards... an anecdote

I once got in a drunken, and personally revealing, conversation with about 10 women (I was the only male present), and when the topic came up, almost every one of them was adamant about beards being an overall negative on a man.

Even among those women who had some admiration for facial hair, a full bushy beard was considered a HUGE turn off, as were those little "soul patch" things at the other end of the scale. During the course of the conversation, one woman mentioned a recent date with a man that had a soul patch, and almost everyone present shuddered involuntarily and stuck out their tongues. Eeewww!

Then someone called the soul patch an "anti-dating device," and they all broke up laughing.

I have endeavored to remain clean shaven ever since (despite what a colossal drag it is to shave.)

Well, say a transporter mishap sends you into a parallel universe where everyone is a bunch of evil space pirates....

Most men can pull off a beard when they keep it trimmed and clean.

Today I saw a beard that screamed NO.
Beard dreadlocks. seriously not attractive especially on white guy.

others:
Santa beard - only when your hair is grey, not when younger.

Intentionally Shaggy Short beard - no , looks messy

Mutton Chops - look stupid no matter what you look like.

Soul patch - looks stupid like you missed a spot shaving.

Ouch! I have a goatee. Mebbe I should start a new poll here with my photo, and ask the members of MacRumors (especially those of the fairer gender) to vote "AYE" or "NAY".

Well, in fairness the goatee never came up. :)

The "eww!" in the first part was all about "full" bushy beards I think, and the laughing was just about the soul patch or excessively, uh... "creative" beards and beard trimming. Like those guys that trim their beards into crazy lines and such.
