In what situations does a beard look good?

What's up with these outdated ideas of beards? Sure, an enormous ZZ Top or 18th-century-looking beard aren't going to be sexy or stylish. But a nicely grown-in beard, trimmed, kept manageable, clean, and edged, can be VERY attractive and flattering on some men--even trendy these days. It's anti-trend and anti-abercrombie. But then, even some 3-day stubble can be considered a beard of sorts and still be trendy without being anti-trend.

Are you serious about this? The guys in these images are fashion disasters -- pathetic and abysmal.

To me, a guy with a beard looks like an unkempt slob, a super nerd, or a spineless fashion zealot trying too hard to be cool -- or, more likely, all of the above. The beard thing is just not working. It's not working on a homeless hippie, and it's not working on a Calvin Klein model, either. I mean, everyone knows that it's basically just a guy who's too lazy to shave.

A beard can add gravitas to a person with otherwise weak facial features, especially someone young who is put in a position of authority - it makes him look older.

I was stunned when I saw our IS manager after he'd shaved his beard - he looked like a little lost boy (and he's in his late forties), yet with the beard he looked much more authoritative.

I agree. And yes, all those examples are hot, and any ones that are less so would look worse without the beard. It makes me sad when people say beards make guys look awful, because it might make guys listen to them and then they wouldn't have beards, which makes me sad.

I really dislike the thin line joining the goatee a la Beadle. This is often done to try and pronounce the jaw line and hide jowells. I'd compare this to the orange make up face which abruptly ends at the chin with women.

Do men who decide to grow beards actually worry about what they wear with it? Seems lame to me but hey, I think facial hair of any kind sucks anyway. I think a clean shaven man is best but if you must, I say buy one of those denim jackets with the fake sheep fur in the collar.

I have been questioned by the authorities based on facial hair and clothing choice and skin color. Then again, I tend not to really take care of my beard until it gets to the point that it needs to be shaven. (Read: once every week and a half or so) Basically, I hate shaving but I don't like the way a messy beard looks, so I shave right before the beard stops looking good.
