I share your frustration. I was actually very pleased (and surprised) at how well the 1.0.0 version tracked my HR during different types of workouts and while resting. I have a lot of experience with chest and wrist HR monitors and really didn't think apple would get it right with the initial release. But they did but now completely messed it up on the first update. Ridiculous.

I am hopeful that they can fix it since it worked well previously.

I thought the exact same thing prior to the 1.0.1 update. So much so that I sold my Basis Peak which was a far superior activity / sleep tracker than the AW. Oh right, Apple doesn't allow sleep tracking on the AW as we are to dumb to manage the battery life for 24 hours.

I am pretty frustrated with it right now and ready to send it back. If the next update doesn't bring marked improvements in the HR tracking, I am moving on to something else.
