I received a Quick Silver PowerMac G4 from my boss yesterday. He was no longer using it and in a wonderful display of generosity gave it to me to which I am extremely grateful.

I have confirmed that it has:

(1) 800MHz processor
(3) 512MB 133MHz RAM modules
(0) Airport cards
(1) 40GB Drive
(1) CD-RW most likely the base CD-RW
(1) Internal 250MB Zip Drive
(1) Original Keyboard
(1) AGP ATI Radeon 7500 32MB
(1) PCI ATI RV100 32MB
I just picked up a 2002 QS G4 800Mhz almost identical to yours. Mine has a DVD drive (but it's broken), and only 512Mb. Have reinstalled 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2, liking it so far!

You're in a similar scenario as I was with my Digital Audio, with regards to CPUs, look out for whole Macs that already have the CPU you want, that way it's far less likely the seller know what they are selling. My Dual 1.6Ghz Sonnet G4 CPU came in a Gigabit Ethernet G4 that I got for £25! The seller had purchased the Sonnet CPU new but thought it wasn't worth a lot, it came with the original CPU and the Sonnet box and firmware CD too. I put the Gigabit Ethernet back to stock and put the Sonnet in my Digital Audio.

With GPUs, watch out with the 9650, I got one and I cant get it working at all and I'm pretty sure its firmware related.

Nice score :) I did not want to drop the $300 bucks for a sonnet CPU in my QS, so I opted for a Dual 1Ghz daughter card+heatsink for $34.00 purchased separately ($12DC & 22HS) on ebay. I agree that part of the fun is hunting down the good deals. FWIW, my QS came to me as a low spec'd single 733Mhz production date July 2001 (983rd that week). When I installed the "new" dual 1Ghz cpu, Tiger recognized L3 right away (Leopard does as well). These guys gave me the same warning & is certainly a thing, but I (luckily) have not experienced the disabled/unrecognized L3 glitch with this QS.

Thanks for the SATA controller link Dez. I went ahead and picked one up. Let's see if it actually works :D For the record, I have had a helluva time finding a Sata controller that wasn't stupid expensive (like sonnet cpu territory) & met its claims & actually worked in my QS lol, so the linked $15 card is exciting news.

Anyhow, have fun, man. QuickSilvers kick ass & are a blast & easy to work on. By Far my favorite PPC mac I own, use regularly if not almost daily & these guys (as has already been demonstrated) are beyond knowledgeable about PPC in general.

Glad to see the L3 cache is working for you in your 733Mhz-stock Quick silver :) it seems whether or not L3 cache gets recognised is a bit of a crap shoot (I do know that quick silvers shipped with a number of boot rom versions so it may have something to with that)

Np on the SATA card, I hope it works for you it should :) the ACARD PCI ATA/SATA cards generally play very nice with macs of all types

in regards to the delay on booting from a SATA card, on the flashed PC SATA cards the dark grey screen you get when booting from one is actually the firmware on the card loading, if your parse the drive in open firmware (which will load the firmware) then go to boot from it you will notice it boots right away without any delay, now i dont know if other SATA cards (which use a different firmware like the sonnet and ACARD cards) have this delay, but i figured id mention it as a few people ask what the grey screen is about :) (I only have a flashed PC SATA card to experiment with unfortunately) BTW I recommend avoiding OWC SSDs they dont have a good track record.

How many reading this thread are scratching their heads on this: "parse the drive in open firmware" ?
So what is....wait...I've changed my mind...don't explain or post...Aaaahhh noooo...my noob eye & brain can't take this.
