One greatest advantage of the Apple Pencil to me - built in rechargeable battery.

How's the palm rejection? This is my number one concern since I couldn't disable the touch input on an iPad, like I could in Windows.

Not like Windows.

On that, if you do an accidental touch it registers it as a touch input - not a pen.

On the iPad, it registers it as a pen input and marks the paper...so you have to go and erase the input.

Also the - lower the pen to lower keyboard and stop touch input isn't on the iPad...

I concur with Atomic Walrus. The Pencil is great for taking notes. I'm using mostly OneNote.

I had a Surface Pro 3. The Pencil is a lot better. But, I agree that Apple should have considered some way to carry the Pencil with the IPP.

You guys should take a look at this video by an artist who has used both the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. I've linked directly to where he compares the SP4 and iPP but you can watch the rest of the video if interested. Note that he forgot to turn on his mic for the first 10 mins or so.

I will say it does feel a little less like writing on glass, than the SP3.

It's not all negatives..and once the apps start improving I think it will work well for the most part..

Ding Ding Ding! The only app that seems to work well with the Pencil is Notes and Procreate. Once developers get their hands on the Pencil and start experimenting with how things work, we'll get improved apps for notes/drawing on the Pro. I'm enjoying it so far. Compared to my old Surface Pro 3 pen and Manga Studio, Top notch app and drawing experience so far using the Pencil and Procreate.

I went from nearly packing the iPad and pen up to be returned, to deciding I was already down a lot of money, and why not spend the $8 on goodnotes.

And the app is amazing.

The smart pen input is great, and I imported my textbooks and it should work well, surprisingly better than PDF expert.

But it's still noticeably loud to write on. My wife was 5 feet away and could hear it loudly and clear...and it's with me trying to be soft and quiet!

Easy solution - just buy her some of these...

Thx for sharing my video. Again, I apologize for no audio for the first 12 minutes! I hadn't Twitch'd in quite some time, and forgot you needed to toggle on the mic in the separate app that actually does the streaming. Ugh.

I'll try to do some more recording later. In the meantime, I've posted a few sketches to my Instagram and will continue to do so on a daily basis.

Not me! :)

I've had every Surface, and presently own a very nice SP4 i5, which I like.

I knew immediately the Apple pen was better from just a demo. I'm not sure about Wacom, they are/were the gold standard. Will see.

Not a problem, I really enjoyed watching you at work. I had a 5 minute play with a Pencil in an Apple store but I'm still waiting on mine being delivered. From my brief demo and from watching you sketch with it, it's clearly an excellent tool and a big leap forward compared to other styli on the market.

Anyway, keep on sketching! Thanks for sharing.

The Apple Pencil is loud. But it is so nice to use that I don't really care too much about it.

But yes I would definitely like:
  • Something that acts more like a pencil (I'd really like an "eraser" on top)
  • Some way to attach it to the iPad Pro! I don't want to lose a $100 accessory because I couldn't figure out where to keep it.
For a first gen attempt, Apple did very well. I hope they'll continue to iterate and improve.

I have used a SP3 for note taking for since it first came out - so around 18 months. I have two of those pens and i have always enjoyed it.

But the Apple Pencil is better. Not miles better but enough. I even wrote the same note side by side on SP3 and Notes App. And if people doubt it's accuracy, get a new pencil - it is on point. I can get it where i want it , no problems. And everyone that has seen is was impressed. Where they can improve, is the friction with the glass and the tip.

The App support right now doesn't truly make the ipad pro the power house note taking app. But i don't think you can say the same on the surface. They have one good app and that's one note and even that has it's own issues. The Notes App - even though it is heavily limited is a better and i have already done enough work on it that is actually translated to productivity for my job.

As for is it worth more? for people who complain about 100 dollar pencil, that surface pro pen is 50 bucks and the adonit jot pro is 79 bucks. Could apple done more with their pencil design..absolutely, but nothing I have seen from Apple ever follows the norm?

It is definitely a bit loud when you're writing. Not so much when you sketch. About the same as the original pen that came with the SP1/2 (I ended up using the Wacom version that had rubber tips)

This might be crazy, but I'm looking at this cap and thinking... attachable eraser add-on that replaces the cap?

Interesting. From an artist/illustrator perspective, it's an amazing experience using the pencil in a way that I am used to with real tools. Pro Create is really well done and there's a natural interaction that's intuitive coming from pencil and paper and going digital with the pencil.

I do own a SP3 and Wacom Cintiq companion (Windows tablet), and a standalone Cintiq and for sure this will be my daily driver. The Cintiq coupled with Mac OS or Windows is like a truck. Useful, but not necessarily something I need to drive every day to get places.

I don't think it's crazy at all. Currently the cap is quite useless (I can't even use it to cap the tip when charging). I believe the Surface Pro 4's stylus has an eraser function at the other end. It's weird - it seems so completely intuitive that it's a bizarre oversight by "Chief Design Officer" Jony Ive. Well perhaps they'll be "saving it" for the next iteration....

You mean like how the first gen iPhone didn't have copy/paste functionality? Considering Ive's team uses sketchbooks and most likely a wide array of pencils I doubt it was something they just didn't think of. Maybe this is all they were able to nail with the first gen. Of course I don't know. I'm just skeptical no one inside Apple thought about it. It would be an interesting question to ask though.

Hey, hey. Hey now. Don't listen to them, Original Surface Pro.
I really like my Surface Pro 1. From where I'm coming from it's a better device than the SP3 (doesn't thermal throttle nearly as much, better pen tech). Can't really defend that aspect ratio choice though.

Pencil is a bit slippery, depending on the state of your fingers (temperature, etc.). Still uncertain how I feel about that.

I never used one, so cannot judge. Then SP3 really got me interested in the surface and I owned one for a while
