This is the plan (seems to be a consensus on ccc), however, Time Machine has already corrupted my computer so I still have to deal with the damage it has done.

Does CarbonCopyCloner work similar to Time Machine-- external drive you can prompt to backup everything?

1) disable time machine

2) start using CarbonCopyCloner for backups
Umm, no.

Time Machine is a long proven reliable backup method. Just because a new OS has issues that are somewhat related (Mounting Encrypted Password Protected External Drives), doesn't mean everyone should just dump the backup method entirely.

I use both Time Machine and CCC for backups. CCC is great to run nightly backups of locations with large files like Virtual Machines and Music Libraries. Time Machine is great for hourly (and daily, monthly, and yearly) backups of everything else.

CCC is great for setting scheduled backups and being precise on what's being backed up. There's always been great support and updates to address random issues come frequently. I still don't see it as a replacement for Time Machine, but a great addition to Time Machine...

It was a long, proven method until 2021 when issues arose. This is now my second iMac that has been corrupted by Time Machine. The first one was toast within 2 months and had to get replaced. I don't know why people are so resistant to the fact that there are problems with Time Machine and many have been affected. Denying the issues that exist with the OS doesn't help anyone and doesn't help to get the issues fixed or have people come together to find solutions. I have had zero issues with this computer with mounting, ejection and copies of backups--- however, the computer is now crashing which is what happened with the first one and first aid shows it has irreparable damage from Time Machine.

Time Machine is great when it works... 2/2 iMacs in the last 2 years being corrupted by it is enough for me to have to abandon it unfortunately, but I was hoping someone had found some sort of solution, workaround, something to avoid the corruption.

AFAIK CCC backups everything in your drive so much so it can make a bootable copy but you have to look more into that.

CCC is made by Bombich software and AFAIK thats their only product and they specialise in Mac backups. Owner of the company personally replies to support questions!

Its not subscription service and you get update even when new versions are released. Great service and app!

CCC has hourly, daily, and monthly backups. How is it different than time machine? The only thing I think TM does that CCC does not is file version history I think in TM you can browse every iteration you made on a file.

I heard too much horror stories of TM to rely on it including stuff that happened to me. Never had issues with CCC.

Now I use TM for full backup of my mac mini, is so easy just select the full drive and backup it. Also is great about you mention of every iteration of the file. Dealing with that iteration on CCC is more complex, I think with Snapshots? I don't know but I feel is more complex.

I'll use CCC for other things like cloning drives, and other things.

So both apps are handy.

IIRC CCC can no longer make bootable copies due to macOS' increased security. It's mainly good for backing up user folders.

I heard that too but seems they backed up and said there is a way to do a bootable copy but its getting complicated for me. I just want my files.
