The statistics on your phone have to be manually reset at the same time the provider's billing cycle flips over - good luck with that. And the stats on my wireless hotspot are always inaccurate. With AT&T they also say there is about a 3 hour delay with the usage statistics in their iOS app.

Honestly it's a minor annoyance. But I think it's funny that every month, it's the same right before my cycle ends.

Haha chill man. I assume you do have unlimited data and use 20+ GB's trolling macrumors everyday. You're ignorant if you aren't open to the idea of big money companies screwing the consumer. Sorry, wake up.

I do have unlimited data and there's months that I use a lot of data and other's when usage is low.
"Big Money companies" have to follow the rules and laws also. You think they just randomly throw a few GB's extra per month on their customers usage just to make more?
There's strict regulations and tools that measure each mb used by your device, how, when and where.
Its not the carriers fault if you go over your data amount. Everything is there clearly measured on both ends. Your device measures it and the carriers network also measures and you can view it daily. How hard is it?
Or how easy is it to blame others.

In other words every month your data amount is not enough for you and you continue to go over regularly.
And how is that the carriers fault?
There is very small difference between what I see in settings and my carriers data measured on their app. 50-100mb if that and that's because the iphone tracks it right away the second data is used and the carriers network takes longer time to collect all info from various cell towers, measure it and display it on their app.

In my experience, there is a big difference between AT&T corporate stores (positive), and affiliate/franchise stores (negative). An orange awning and AT&T logo on a storefront doesn't mean it's actually an AT&T store. It can be Vinny Scumbag's franchise store, and boy are they aggressive. Total opposite experience in the big corporate store, very chill, low pressure, and helpful employees.

At least this has been my experience in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Im with you on that.
Many times its hard to tell or know if a certain location is a corporate AT&T store or a privately owned franchised location.
With privately owned locations it feels like you're getting played by used car salesman telling you all kinds of stories to make a sale:D

Take your tinfoil hat off and take responsibility of your own usage.
Its easy to say oh the carrier towards the end of my cycle always wacks me extra for overages.
I dont stream or do anything to use all those GB's of data, they're just making up...
While I agree with you, a 10-fold increase in FCC complaints seems to be unprecedented and is hard to ignore:
Verizon Customers Bombard FCC with Gripes of Overcharges

And, again, while an obvious exception and definitely NOT the norm, this is also possible:
Verizon Forgives Nonprofit's $20,300 Data Overage Bill

I hear you.
I think many people still do not get the concept and many different processes in the back eat up big amounts of data as we move to more data intensive apps, bigger pictures, videos, fast connections etc..
Then when they fall for the carriers metered data money trap and have to pay extra they file fcc and bbb complains because the carrier will not remove the additional charges from their bill.
Blaming the carrier is easier.

Uh no.

Mysteriously, I've averaged 4-6gb a month. They gave me a "free upgrade" to 8, all of a sudden my usage goes up? I don't browse any different. Then I get a free boost to 12, and same deal - my usage magically goes up with the same browsing habits?

Im on wifi most of the day and night, I have wifi assist off, and as I've repeatedly said do not stream video. So sure, I guess I just consume more than my plan allows when it's never been an issue for me prior.

Look if I was guilty of consuming massive data I would admit it. One month I let my kids tether to my phone with their iPads and accepted I burned through a good chunk of data - big deal. This is different and I don't appreciate you making this automatically my own doing.

Can't you tell what app is using data? I thought the phone tracked this.

I have 6GB through T-Mobile, per phone. Plus like 40GB in data stash and then they go "unlimited" with reduced speeds. Honestly, not one person has used more than 5GB. I check the T-Mobile app weekly (easier than trying to track down 5 phones) and if I see a problem, I go find that phone.

I dont know what your usage or unique situation is but carrier data can easily be tracked and every single mb measured and accounted for in multiple ways.
It's easy to get a hold of it. But again its your account and your money so its up to you to decide what actions you would like to take.
Maybe change carriers since you think they are just ripping you off and charging you for data that you haven't consumed.

  • Go to T-Mobile. And have no more issues with data limits. You said wifi most of time anyways. But att Verizon suck

What stupid advice.

Clarification: It being stupid advice has nothing to do TMO as a carrier. Rather, it's stupid advice b/c you have ZERO idea what TMO's coverage or speeds are in his area.

Where I live, if I want any cellular reception or data speed, there are 2 choices: ATT & VZW. TMO is virtually nonexistent and their closest store is 60 miles away.

I hear you, every time I went to an AT&T store I felt like the pray and the wolves around me hounding to get me away from my unlimited data plan that I had since 2007 with the original iphone 2G.
You could see their eye sparkle when they saw 3 lines on unlimited data. They talked and went over my data and how much I would save and other things. Before I walked away I always told them multiple times to make sure there is no changes mistakenly happen in my account since I want to keep my unlimited data plan. Dont touch or change anything with my plan :D
Their heart was broken:)

This was me every time i upgraded phones. I stressed and stressed not to change the data. They did it anyway.

I hear you, I would tell them many times and they would still try to talk me in a share plan.
I even double checked with the AT&T app when I walked out to make sure they didnt "accidentally" remove it and then I'd have to fight and not be able to get the unlimited data plan back.
When they announced they are stopping the 2 year subsidies and I will be paying the same amount but will have to pay full price for phones now is when I bailed to T mobile and Im doing great.
Cheaper, with unlimited data plan and with 14GB's of tethering also now per line;)

haha that's funny. they would try to look at our plan and they werent able to "save" me money since we had an old family share plan w/ unlimited data (and heavy data use). My final straw was after we got our iPhone 7's. The only line (out of the 5) that wasnt unlimited, consumed more data suddenly. Also, I found out the 2 year upgrade pricing was gone as I was trying to pre-order the iP7 at midnight, so there was no more incentive for us to stay. We jumped to tmobile and are saving $135 per month, plus my wife's line now has unlimited LTE tethering.

Skimming the thread it seems the OP is convinced that the carrier is adding data usage that isn't actually happening. Am I off?

If that's the case arguing here won't solve anything. Time to file a complaint. Or take legal action. And I'm serious. If you're convinced this is happening and it's not you there isn't anything anyone here is going to do for you.

Same experience in Detroit. Always go corporate store.
