hi,

i was really looking forward to this update, but im kinda disappointed that the 13inch doesnt have the new intel processors. do you think they will update just the 13 inch again soon with those processors? is it worth it to wait for that, or should i just buy the 13inch they have now?

I wouldn't! The next update probably won't have C2D! This one shouldn't even have them! If I were you I would wait or go with the 15inch...

I know people are saying C2D get's the job done, but that's besides the point! It's not worth it imho...

I'm pretty happy.

Seems like there are a lot of "F the 13" and "the 15 is decent" attitudes.

I'm pretty happy with the 15 (which is what I was interested in). The HD screen is icing on the cake, same with battery life. 'Only thinh that might be improved is a Radeon instead of GeForce, plus USB 3.0. I would suspect the use of nVidia is technical having to do with the seamless GPU switching whether it be Optimus or Apple's own solution (as someone here speculated). USB 3.0 is a nice thought but nobody was holding their breath for it as even Intel doesn't support it yet.

I'm slightly put off by all the angry people about the C2D in the 13. I mean, I expected as much, but still... I believe the C2D was the best choice to be made by the engineers at Apple. Theoretically the i3 wouldn't provide much of a CPU performance increase at all over the C2D, yet DUE TO LICENSING IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO COMBINE IT WOULD A GOOD GPU. Meaning, the CPU would need to use Intel's integrated graphics or include a discrete GPU, which would not only lower battery life in a 13" due to the smaller battery, but also is probably pretty much impossible to fit on such a small logic board in that thing.

I just with people would put some research and thought into the engineering decisions that Apple makes instead of saying "F yooouuuuu, it's not the newest branding!"

Funny thing is that I'm willing to bet most of the complainers do not use their hardware to the fullest capabilities. I have an iMac as well (with the same processor) and I've got enough to get the job done doing light work CS3 & Office. You'd think everyone complaining is a professional graphic designer lol.

It's already begun, don't worry ;)

Since I've just got home from work, I ask you objectively (and I don't care about buying one because my iPad will be more than enough for my current mobile needs):

Are these solid updates to the whole line? My perception is YES, for the following reasons:

- Longer battery life all around;
- LED-backlit displays all over;
- Core i5 and i7 options apart from the 13" (after all, why i3 if the C2D is pretty much the same?);
- on-the-fly GPU switching for 15" and 17";
- MUCH better integrated GFX for the 13";
- same leading design and build quality.

And please, don't come with Blu-Ray crap as this is a stillborn technology for laptops.

What are your thoughts?

I am very happy with the updated MBP line. But then again I tend to look at life from a happy place.

For the folks bitching and moaning that Steve and Co. didn't design a device to your particular specs. Maybe it is time to get outside. Run a few laps, check out nature, find a girlfriend. Bitching and moaning is really unattractive. It doesn't increase your status, make friends (beyond FB), and really only serves to compound the misery that is your life. Be the change people.

Stop It!

Good God what is wrong with some people in here?! What did u expect the upgrades to have?..Missile launchers on the new MBP?! They are absolutely great! They are faster, better graphics, insane battery life! And they are made by Apple! So they are reliable and they will last for a good few years! I still have my PowerBook G4, and besides it being sluggish..well a bit more than just that..its absolutely fine..and ive had it for 5 years! And those with the blu-ray stuff..FFS! If u want blu ray so badly..go buy urselves a PS3 for £200something, an HD Projectors from ebay (u can get some chinese ones for arnd £300)..and an HD projector screen from Argos for £100 and enjoy freaking fully HD blu ray movies the right way! Not on a 15" screen! If u dont like the upgrade..dont buy the computer! Stop complaining! And on tht note..i cant wait to get my hands on a MBP 15" midrange! OH YEH! (it sucks that they dont have them in stock in UK retail stores yet!!AGHRR..oh and as for the prices in the uk..i think they went up significantly from january the 1st when the freaking tax went up)..
:apple:

It boggles the mind Apple went with an Nvidia 3XX card instead of the vastly superior and far more efficient, and cooler, ATI 5XXX cards.

My initial thought when I saw "330M GT" was "sigh... fail", then I checked the becnhmarks and some vids of it in action, and my reaction has changed...

Sigh.... FAIL.

You bet. I bet Apple is going to file for bankruptcy as soon as they read your post.

Just watch how popular these machines are going to be....

It's the best choice in context and that context is Apple doesn't want to update the logic board. there are plenty of laptosp that show the optimus solution can push up battery life. The asus laptop with 310 discrete (which performs similarly and a little bit less than the 320 according to Nvidia) and i3 has 8 hours and a half battery life on the maximum. keep in mind asus has horrible battery technology.

the only reason is the logic board. and whether you think it's a good enough reason is up to you individually.

I'd like to think that I'm a very objective person.

But the fact of the matter is, Apple sticking with the Core 2 Duo is indefensible. It's your money, please waste it as how you like, but not upgrading the processor for the 13" is a slap in the face. It'll probably sell like hotcakes and i don't think anybody cares about the extra power, but it's still a slap in the face. an upgraded graphics card, more RAM? That's just part of technology, they're merely "moving with it" instead of offering you something more. I think Apple fanboys are truly blind and I have never felt so bad for a group of fanboys in my life.

Oh also, It's sad that there's no resolution bump, but I realize that is probably very very farfetchd so that's fine. this is why anybody who gives a **** about computers don't buy mac. not because of how expensive it is. i'd spend the money if i felt like apple cared enough to not slap me around whenever there's a refresh.

that said, 15" seems to be the good buy. My only guess is that the i3 is backordered so maybe if we wait a couple of months, it'd be upgraded.

This sums up my feelings perfectly! It just feels like a rip-off, plan and simple! People should want to get the most bang for their buck. And the new 13's are just a huge waste to me, but it's their money so whatever! :rolleyes:

That's the lamest fanboy argument ever, the i3 blows the C2D out of the water.

Please show facts, not FUD please. Apart from HT, no one is impressed with the i3, even though they are actually using a high-clock version of it (which wouldn't make it to the 13" anyway):

http://www.guruht.com/2009/08/default-intel-core-i3-vs-core-2-e8400.html

Plus the fact that the i3 incorporates GFX into the CPU, which would render Apple's custom NVIDIA solution useless. So between a higher-clock C2D and a lower-clock i3, the verdict is much more blurred.

Someone's drunk on that kool-aid!

stuck between 13" MBP and Sony Vaio Z...:confused:

I received my custom configured Z about 3 weeks ago, and it came with a 30-day return policy. Well, I'm glad the MBP refresh was today. I really wanted to see Apple up the ante with the 13, but given its history as the budget model of the product line, the lack of major update not surprise me. It has solidified my decision to keep the Z.

The Z is not for everyone -- certainly not at that pricepoint (mine came out to $2300, and that after haggling for a 15% discount!), certainly not for everyone in a forum called MacRumors ;), and it is not without its quirks -- but for me, it was the ideal combination of outright power and form factor, and has no real competition at the moment.

Not in MBP

1- BLU-RAY
2- USB 3
3- option for matte finish which isn't a pricey add on option.
4- no expresscard slot for 15" Models

I cant see apple putting a blu-ray drive in as they cannot generate a revenue stream from it, it takes money away from apple's downloaded content revenue stream. Apple sees the future in downloadable or streaming content from which they can take their cut.

Just to be clear you won't see an nVidia solution on Arrandale/Clarksfield, unless it's dedicated, since they don't have a license for QPI/DMI from Intel.

The line is very blurred but I lean toward GPU power.

That's all very well but what the **** does any of that have to do with computers?

Oh yeah dude I hear price bumps are all the rage these days!

Fully agreed; and this is probably why Apple stuck to C2Ds in its 13" models in the first place...otherwise it would have crappy Intel GMAs instead of the custom 330M.

MBs (white books) have been typically refreshed in Sept-Oct right? If Apple does so this year, what will the substantial differentiator between it and the new 13” MBP?

I suspect (or maybe it’s hope) that Apple will again refresh the 13” MBP at the same time to include an iX CPU. By then they should be able to address the graphics issue…unless it is cost prohibitive. Just look at the price hike of the low end 15”.

If no refresh again of the 13” MBP when (and assuming) the white book is refreshed, the difference between the two will be a $200 price premium for aluminum versus polycarbonate…and perhaps 4GB versus 2BG of RAM standard…oh, and FireWire, which is bfd for an entry level machine.

but again just to be clear, this is because apple doesn't want to redesign the logic board. i wonder if it costs apple more in the long run to have nvidia make a custom chip so similar to the 310 or if apple just redesigned the board.

maybe nvidia is making it on the cheap to spite intel.

Question on 1680-by-1050 display upgrade

I would assume that if the display resolution on the 15" is bumped to 1680-by-1050, it will eat up battery faster compared to the standard 1440-by-900 display.

Can someone confirm this?

All is good with this update apart from graphics cards!

I still cant get over 320 / 330 fact :(

(and the asking price ofc!)
