The Information's Kaya Yurieff and Kalley Huang in April reported that Meta was working on a long-awaited Instagram app for iPads.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman corroborated the report in his Power On newsletter today.

Gurman said that Meta employees are "actively testing" Instagram for the iPad, and he expects the app to be released this year, barring any setbacks.

Meta has offered a Facebook app for iPads since 2011, but it had largely avoided offering apps for the device otherwise. That tune finally seems to be changing, as the company released a WhatsApp app for iPads last week, and there are now multiple sources who have claimed that an Instagram app for iPads is in the pipeline too.

There is no word yet on whether Meta plans to release an iPad app for Threads as well.

Finally! It only took them over a decade. It’s ridiculous that one of the most media focused apps has ignored the iPad for so long. Better late than never, I guess. Hopefully they actually optimize it for the larger screen and don’t just give us a stretched-out phone version.

Isn't it curious that the government (both US and EU) love to call out Apple for anticompetitivness or even monopoly, but seemed disconcerned that META would not provide an Instagram app for iPad until (sometime). FaceBook (Meta) acquired Instagram in 2012. IPad had already been around for two years before that. So 13 years later they get around to offering an app. Hmmm....

What does not having an app have to do with being a monopoly?

Don’t get me wrong I think meta is pure evil and don’t use any of their stuff

But I don’t really get what your point is

Does that mean I need to reupload all my photos in a much high resolution, because 1440x1800 does not look sharp enough on an iPad?

No one uses threads.
I guess they're all bots then

Threads now has more than 100 million daily active users, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday. It’s a notable milestone not just because it’s a big number; it’s also the first time Meta has a daily active user figure publicly.

and Meta/Zuckerberg is lying to the SEC

Instagram Threads, Meta’s X competitor, has now grown to over 350 million monthly active users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call on Wednesday. That’s an increase of 30 million users since the prior quarter, where Meta reported that Threads had 320 million users.

While Threads is still small in comparison to Meta’s other social apps — Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp — its growth is helping to cement its place in the microblogging app ecosystem. In total, Meta says that more than 3.4 billion people now use at least one of Meta’s apps daily.

On Wednesday’s call, Zuckerberg told investors that the growth indicates that Threads “continues to be on track to become our next major social app.” He additionally noted that there’s been a 35% increase in time spent on Threads as a result of improvements to the app’s recommendations systems.

Is this sarcasm?

Oddly enough, the discontinued Layout and Boomerang companion apps for Instagram did have native iPad versions.
