It might be true, but making an ipad version it's not reinventing the wheel, how many resources would be needed to scale the app...
1 for 2 weeks.
It's really simple to accomplish.

They are hiding other reasons behind their agenda.

This article doesn't mention the response from Marques where he states if there was a good app more people would use it. I can't remember the guys response but MacRumors should put the whole conversation on here.

Because they don’t want to lose people to using iPad only. Thus removing their geo tracking for advertising.
That, and probably their research shows that keeping people on iPhone provides more use time. To these companies the amount of eyeball time is everything.

Funnily enough, “casual” use can amount to more time than focused use.

He must mean, he won’t pay enough to get good employees. Actual effort required to add iPad support to an iPhone app is not much. After all, it is already in Xcode, so adding a different screen layout? Is this guy clueless on purpose, or just incompetent?

I don’t use Instagram, but with all the money they have, they can’t hire some interns to strictly work on this? Can’t be too difficult.

I really don’t understand instagram’s popularity? I tried it once when someone shared with me photos on it. Couldn’t believe that as a photo sharing platform I couldn’t zoom in (without it snapping back) or flick left/right to go to the next photo! Haven’t touched it since. I know the young people don’t use it, so is it mainly a middle aged people thing?

‘We can’t get GPS geolocation data from most iPad users so we want to push them to use IG on iPhone only’

I always assumed that it was because they want content publishers, in order to get any geo tags as well as getting as much info out of the post photo or video as possible, as opposed to content browsers, which an iPad user is more likely to be.

As an iPad user & photographer, I find this ridiculous. Of course I want an iPad version of instagram! And I would think everyone else who owns an iPad would want it as well. There’s an iPad version of FaceBook. It makes zero sense why FB wouldn’t make one for Instagram, especially since they OWN Instagram!

You would not believe the number of times on here I've seen ridiculous statements from people about this. "But no one posts pictures from an iPad!" As if wanting to browse other people's photos/stories on a device with a much larger screen was such a strange concept.

What. Not enough iPad users to scrape data from?

Going against Meta mission statement of “connecting everyone” aren’t we, IG?

Seriously? I finished my first app last week, it was more complex than Instagram and even I, as a solo developer, was able to make it work on iPad. I know they use React - Native, and it's really not hard to make it work on iPad.

Seems like the same thing Netflix does with interactive content on the Apple TV, as if the Apple TV doesn't have the capability to due the interactive bit, to me they are just bitter as seen by the lack of tie-in with the Apple TV app, etc.

3) the resizing and compressing of photos on Insta is so aggressive that the photos would look really crappy on iPad, and they aren’t ready to pay for the extra server costs to allow for high res photos (easy to believe)
I don't use instagram. Do the photos look awful on computer screens? Or is this less of a storage problem, and more of a bandwidth thing?

I know right?! Plus, Instagram is one of the biggest platforms for professional photographers to connect & get their work seen. It’s not just for models puckering their lips! You’d think IG would want to make photographers happy. They are a huge part of their base. But also anyone with an iPad. It’s just silly that they won’t make an iPad app. They are a huge company owned by Face Book! There are lesser apps that have an iPad specific app as well as a phone app. 🤦‍♂️

Money, money, money.
Money? Gimme a break. Instagram is owned by one of the biggest companies in the world! Making an iPad App would be chump change for them. There are small Mom & pop companies with iPad specific apps. It makes zero sense.
