The day Instagram pushes this privacy invasion onto my iPhone is the same day I delete Instagram.
I deleted it a while back. No regrets. 10/10, would recommend.

Time for someone to make an app devoid of all this crap
This is awesome for the person trying to make the next Instagram.
Vero is starting to look more and more attractive. Now if only everyone starts creating an account there.
[doublepost=1538720060][/doublepost]Location History helps you explore what's around you, get more relevant ads, and helps improve Facebook.
I'm on it. Soon, I'm releasing the social app to end it all, which I made while I was bored. Devoid of all nonsense, non-distracting black and white UI, purely communication, the thing that will exist when everything else is gone. The only reason I don't say what it is is I don't want my MR account tied to it if it takes off.Time for someone to make an app devoid of all this crap
Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Instagram > Never
Now you’re good. And even if they did have my info, the jokes on them—I don’t have a FaceBook account!
I kinda need it just for messaging because it's my only point of contact for some people, including family members in foreign countries. And I have to defend the app. It's a lot nicer and less cluttered than all other social apps. I don't really use it, but I don't see much to complain about either.I deleted it a while back. No regrets. 10/10, would recommend.
Gosh no, that app is awful. And there's even less reason to trust them if you look at their leadership. And nobody will use it anyway because it's just bad, 2008 design.Vero is starting to look more and more attractive. Now if only everyone starts creating an account there.
It's too inaccurate. On cell, it shows the nearest gateway (between towers and Internet), which is likely a few hundred miles away. On a home connection, a station that's also far but maybe in the same city. On satellite, probably a quarter way across the world. It's never that simple. Even with Location Services disabled, they can still determine your location through your IP address (Google do this too)
lol i like this fairyale "fought against facebook". They fought against facebook by receiving one billion dollars from them.with the departure of their founders who fought against facebook, we’ll continue to see this gradual decline of instagram
Yes, if only someone would create a new social media app that was insanely popular, already has accounts for most of my friends and colleagues, has mostly active users that post and check in regularly, don’t make their money from advertising, and yet do not charge any sort of registration fee or subscription.
It’s so easy, I’m surprised nobody has done it yet.

Until they “accidentally” change the setting to ‘hourly’Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Instagram > Never
Now you’re good. And even if they did have my info, the jokes on them—I don’t have a FaceBook account!
It’s funny you say this. Deleted Facebook last spring and deleted Instagram yesterday after this article came out. Was thinking a blog would give me back control on what I want to share with the internet.I already went Instagram only and closed all other accounts due to excessive politic posts and security BS. Just give me fun and clever photos. Some, even true art! Now this crap? We’re going to go full circle. Back to GeoCities web pages hosting photo albums to share with friends.
actually the joke is on you -- they will continue to make a “ghost” profile, which will still track you, and still store all of your information. they then use all of the aggregated data from the sources they have. they know who you are, and you have a profile... you just didn’t sign in to it.
They ask themselves how they can make more money every day, by any means necessary. And yeah, most of those also happen to make their app horrible ¯\_(ツ)_/¯It’s like they ask themselves how they can make their app horrible day by day.
Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Instagram > Never

You don’t strip EXIF? That’s like rule #1 when I export from Lightroom Mobile. It’s in the settings for the app to remove location data when exporting. They have no idea unless I provide them the info, which I will sometimes provide in a broad sense if I’m traveling or at a large public gathering, but much of the time I don’t publish it.They still can get your location from an image’s EXIF.
Don’t underestimate how putrid Facebook and all of its enabling employees are.
I rarely post in public. My home address is known. First of all, I don’t use Instagram often. My workflow is to take photos, edit them in Lightroom Mobile when I get home, export with location data stripped from the EXIF, and then publish if any are good. It's never that simple. Even with Location Services disabled, they can still determine your location through your IP address (Google do this too)
This is all sandboxed. On iOS an app can’t access your privacy settings.Until they “accidentally” change the setting to ‘hourly’
I’m pretty good with using blockers and VPNs. How do I know? Google doesn’t know my location anymore and none of their ads are relevant to me. That tells me everything I need to know about how good I am at this.Yeah… but you know about so-called ‘shadow profiles’, right?
Doesn’t seem to make a difference if you don’t actively have a facebook account - facebook have a workaround!
See above responses.actually the joke is on you -- they will continue to make a “ghost” profile, which will still track you, and still store all of your information. they then use all of the aggregated data from the sources they have. they know who you are, and you have a profile... you just didn’t sign in to it.
Instagram is more than iPhone app and every picture is geotagged. This is all sandboxed. On iOS an app can’t access your privacy settings.
People who don’t care whether ads target them geographically?
First the founder of WhatsApp left (and threw away $1B in doing so), now this. The sub-company founders leaving is reason enough for me to dislike Facebook.Maybe this was one of the reasons the founders of Instagram left. Who know what’s next. Full integration with FB has always been Zuck’s endgame.
I'm fully aware of that and don't care.People who care about their privacy and are smart enough to realize their personal information is the product that Facebook is selling.
