Why an actual date of birth and not just a declaration of being over 18? This would satisfy their stated needs. But not those mentioned by others here of course.
You can easily lie about both. A stronger method of age identification would be to show picture from a certain period (pet rock, tamagochi, NES games and so on) and only 3 seconds to answer.;) No time to image search.👅 If you know, you'll know immediately. It's harder for kids to fake knowing stuff from before their time.

The age information will be used to create new safety features, and it will help ensure that the "right experiences" are provided to the "right age group."
Ha ha ha, as I would believe Facebook ... well, I do not have an Instagram account and definitely will NOT EVER get one

When you receive a birthday notification and you’re like, “Today isn’t my birthday!” Then you remembered you entered in a fake birthday when you signed up.

That's OK. If Zuckerberg offered me a 30% discount off his latest teledildonic discombobulators about 6 weeks after my real birthday..... it really doesn't matter. I still get the Birthday Discount one way or another. Right?

LOL. Your date of birth is already out there. ALL your info is out there. All my info was leaked with Equifax and T-Mobile. So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

Because whether or not you’re over 18 can change when you have a birthday.

Either way, though, it’s ridiculous. Do they think teenagers have never used a fake ID to buy beer? Asking kids for their birthday, without verification, is like stores asking people to wear masks if they aren’t vaccinated. It’s security theater.

My IG is only for my photography business. So is answering the founding date of the business an acceptable birthdate? I am somewhat with others in this thread, I think they want birthdates for a different reason.

Just put in a fake birthday near your real age. I don't trust the platform well enough, especially since real birthdays are still part of a security key to gain access to real financial / personal data in some antique systems.

Did you not also see the part about them using AI to determine if your age is correct?
AI has gotten pretty impressive lately, i'm pretty sure they can figure out if you're over or under 18.

Sure, you can have it:

01/01/1900
Instagram won’t accept it. They’ll have an error message saying that DOB doesn’t match what they’ve secretly collected about you from other areas so you have to answer honestly or face double the ads…

Interesting idea! Although it might be a problem for people who lived through the era, but paid no attention to the hot trends of the era. I was sort of like that. Back when I still did social media, I'd see conversations on-line about one trendy thing or another in my junior high school. Some of the stuff talked about was stuff I was pretty sure I'd had no clue about back when I was a student at that junior high!

This should be interesting. I wonder how they will verify that the birthdate is correct. Maybe a government photo ID like a driver's license or a passport?

Short of an actual verification process, what use is asking for a birth date? I suppose it's to catch those really very young ones who haven't yet learnt to lie about their birth dates?

I never give out my real birthdate unless absolutely necessary. For IG's birthday request, my birthdate will be somewhere between 01/01/1930 and 12/31/1955. I'll just roll a die. LOL.

Yup yup! Happens all the time! Even with my Starbucks card!
