Instagram has unveiled a new video editing app called Edits, which aims to fill the void left by CapCut's removal from U.S. app stores following federal restrictions on ByteDance-owned applications.

The announcement came from head Adam Mosseri, explaining that Edits as a "full suite of creative tools" for mobile video creators. According to Mosseri, Edits is aimed at creators who produce short-form videos on mobile devices:

Edits will have a much broader range of creative tools and probably a smaller addressable audience. Think a place to track all your ideas instead of templates. Think AI video editing tools on a per clip or per video basis. Think new insights on why your videos are succeeding or struggling.

The app includes AI-powered animation for images, green screen effects, video overlays, automatic captions with customization options, and tools for reducing background noise. It also allows users to save drafts, share projects with collaborators, and leverage a dedicated tab for inspiration and trending audio. Videos created with Edits and shared on Instagram Reels will benefit from advanced performance analytics, allowing creators to monitor engagement metrics such as follower interaction, video skips, and overall reach.

The app arrives in the wake of CapCut's recent delisting from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store due to U.S. law. Mosseri said that Edits will "end up pretty different than CapCut," noting that it is designed to cater to creators who want a more comprehensive toolset rather than casual video makers or users of desktop editing software. The app also stands out by offering export options without watermarks, a feature that has recently become a limitation in CapCut's free version.

Edits launches in February on iOS, and Android at a later date. It is available to pre-order on the App Store now.

Good, this market is in desperate need of some competition. I actually can't believe Capcut is more or less the only option for quickly editing short videos for social media.

I must be the minority as I've never posted a video or reel to Instagram, so apps like this are kinda useless.. Just my photos.

..and my profile is set to private.

Zuckerberg is really the biggest beneficiary of ByteDance's problems, huh? 😬

I think he is the biggest cause (and beneficiary) of ByteDance's problems. Zuckerberg is the voice in congresses' ear.

Zuckerberg didn't spend millions to paint TikTok in a negative light for nothing. He knew Meta would be the biggest winner if ByteDance apps got banned.
oh im pretty sure meta is the one who pushed hard for this regulation
they assumed they will be able to just buy any IG competition that would show up. they never figured competition will came from china and will not be purchasable.
they just fight for their own survival - kids there days consider Instagram to be just as outdated and not cool as facebook and myspace back in the day.

So capcut and bytedance apps were legally banned so that meta could replace them with their own apps? Blatant corruption
Understand that China has done the exact same thing to our companies!

Google, Facebook, yahoo, WhatsApp pre-Meta/FB, and 50+ other US companies are banned from doing business in China, replaced with the Chinese equivalent!!

Or the idiots in congress that own Meta stock that magically find Tik Tok to be "security risk". Nothing but a cash grab. The whole thing is completely idiotic.
Wrong! TikTok had serious security and social agenda! The TikTok app in China promotes STEM to anyone under the age of 16, while China actually and has been proven purposely to promote dangerous challenges, dancing, things that are not productive towards a greater future of America!

China is playing the long game, and not here now game!!

China has banned over 50 US companies from doing business in China years ago, so Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, and many others have been banned from China, replaced with the Chinese equivalent!!

Apple's own Clips app never got much love but I recently reinstalled it and it's really grown into its own. It can edit separate video and audio tracks, and has all the special effects, including putting a Memoji or Animoji over your own head so you can turn yourself into a cartoon or a character and does voiceovers and auto captions like CapCut. And it's free for iPhone/iPad users. I hope Apple continues to push into this space.
