I just don't understand why people would be rude on Instagram. It totally confuses me. People use IG to share photos and snippets about one's life. If a viewer doesn't like that photo, then just *don't comment*....why bash someone?
Because some people seek to "improve" the way they feel (in a relative way) by trying to make everyone else feel worse than them. It's sad and counterproductive, but it happens a lot.

If a viewer doesn't like that photo, then just *don't comment*....why bash someone? That is what I don't get and why I don't mind the option to turn off negative comments. As I said earlier, I keep my account private and have to approve followers...but I have lots of friends with public accounts, and I don't get why they should have to read crap comments from people they don't know, just because someone can post a crap comment???

Why can't people just be nice?

Because what's rude to one person is funny to another. Ever heard of stand up comedy?

Oh neat! I will enable this post haste!

It's sad that you have a classic Gaiking avatar (childhood fave!) but don't seem to recognise that hey, maybe people don't want that kind of comedy around them. Maybe learn to judge the situation better and do stuff like that around like-minded people? I dunno. I manage that.

People can simply ignore it. But they don't have to get all butt hurt by it. You don't agree people generally are over reacting these days?

Thanks I have some killer tattoos. People can simply ignore it. But they don't have to get all butt hurt by it. You don't agree people generally are over reacting these days?
I see people here overreacting to the possibility their trolling days may be coming to end. I see anti feminists getting quite antsy and loud over their society progressing. So yes. I guess I do see that.

People who challenge rules and regulations? Being disrespectful? You mean like Instagram's Terms of Service on harassment and stuff?

You shut them down and they never act up again? You mean silencing them for what they say?

You do it so procedure flows properly? Like, so people can use Instagram without undue disruption from others?

So in your line of work you totally censor people.
/s

Anyway, you're not expressing an opinion when you do that. You're enforcing the Terms of Service.

my post was in general.. i was talking generally people are offended easily, not just instagram. i went a little off topic, sorry.

This looks like it's just going to censor bad words... like how most forums do. Why are all you people complaining about political correctness? It has nothing to do with that. If they wanted that, they'd need some AI to filter out people who assume pronouns or don't "check their privilege," LOL.

Say you're at a party, and having a nice time, and talking to a bunch of interesting people - some friends, some new acquaintances - but there's this one guy you don't know, who keeps screaming obscenities at you. By your logic, you could just leave the party, right? Or try to ignore the person that's yelling obscenities over the top of the conversation you're trying to have. So... what if you could just magically mute the idiot, or the words he's shouting, and continue on talking pleasantly with others. That's the sort of thing these filters are going after. Making it so you don't have to leave the party (and all the social media sites have a vested interest in people staying at the party).

Social media is getting to be another way one interacts with other people, just as the written letter, telephone, email and text message before it (each of which went through their own periods of people saying, "well, that's not real legitimate communication, like the older methods are"). Yes, you can shut down your accounts and withdraw from that method of interacting with others. Why should you have to? You seem to think phone calls and text messages are different, but you could just as easily get rid of your phone and/or computer to escape from harassment via those. Again, why should you have to? If you follow your logic, it means we abandon all new forms of communication to the dicks who are shouting obscenities (and they're doing it, in large part, because they can do so without repercussions, and they can get a rise out of people, and it gives them a brief respite from worrying about their own insecurities).

I don't condone censorship (this isn't that - that would involve the government controlling what you can say in public), and I'm not much for tiptoeing around every issue lest it offend someone's sensibilities, but a technological fix that takes away the fun of being a dick to strangers? How is that really a bad thing?

In your first scenario that person would get stomped quickly. Personally I don't communicate with my actual friends online. We do that in person or actually talk on the phone. There is no one online that I have any connection to that I can't drop at any moment. Someone I do not know saying cruel things mean nothing to me. It's as simple as not using a website or service. I don't need it to survive. If this very conversation turned in a way I don't like. I'll just walk away because it costs me nothing.

I have a number good friends who don't like to talk on the phone, and much prefer messaging - my wife, in particular, was like that, she detested having to actually talk to anyone on the phone; talking in person was great, otherwise Messages was the preferred form of communication. It's clearly a personal preference, and not necessarily generational or cultural. And I have a number of friends in other states and countries, with whom in-person conversations are rare and voice calls are inconvenient. So, again, messaging (Messages.app or otherwise) wins out. As to the scenario I described, yes it doesn't translate to online communities 100% for a variety of reasons, but the bit you're skipping over is, in the scenario you like the rest of the party conversation, it's one jerk that you don't know who is causing trouble - what you're suggesting (simply not using the service), is walking away from the conversation you were enjoying with all those other people, essentially letting the jerk dictate whom you talk to (which is both sad, and irritating to let the jerk prevail). In that case, I think having a way to mute the jerk is quite useful. I get that you don't have any strong attachments to any online communities. I'm saying, plenty of others do, and the answer isn't just, "well give that up".

I bet good money those who over use this moderator tool will see their hit rate fall like a rock. Can't take a hard comment, the crowd will go somewhere else who has the thick skin to take it.

I'm about to blow your mind: You can have an opinion without being a dick about it.

The problem in 2016 isn't opinions. It's people with the emotional maturity of 12 year olds who can't express their opinions without throwing slurs and insults along with them.

Also, if your opinion itself is ignorant or offensive, you're going to get called out on it.

I'm about to blow your mind: disagreement is not hate. Stop conflating them and acting as though the majority of people are mindless trolls. Substituting discourse for ideological safety is a horrible idea that doesn't need explanation to anyone with even the most basic understanding of politics.

Brilliant idea! Don't forget, us old farts can have safe spaces, too:

My trigger word list:

Instag**m,
Fa*cb**k,
Tw**ter,
P*k*mon G*,
S*c**l N*tw*rk*ng in general
W*tch B*nds,
Em*t*c*ns
F*tn*ss M*n*t*r*ng
R*s* G*ld Macbooks

Social networking sucks - it's only there to declare war on the fabric of America through the guise of Political Correctness and Social Justice Warriors. SAD!

What happened to sticks & stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me? Are kids no longer taught this?

Yes, but why should someone have to read how F*&&*^ awesome a photo is when they read the comments. I mean, seriously, couldn't people use more polite language when commenting on random things on the internet?

I like the idea of word filtering as an *** OPTION ***.

What happened to it's the internet, who freakin cares.

I don't understand why there is one set of conduct for "in real life" people and a second, nearly reversed, set of conduct for "internet" people. Everyone is real.

Because you're often anonymous on the Internet. Around the time I was born, people were doing the same thing with markers in school bathroom stalls.

Yeah, but I use to have a cursing censor Safari plugin so my parents wouldn't see nasty YouTube comments on my screen and get mad.

I'm presuming most of the people saying that this is bad want to get away with using racial or sexual slurs.

Guess that's "funny" to you guys

Clearly we are of different generations. My generation *was* the kids writing on the bathroom stalls, and we didn't have the internet when I was in high school.

It's good to have class and respect for others. It will serve you well in life.

Problem is a lot of people don't respond the way you're describing, with "disagreement." They respond with a bunch of personal attacks, which is stupid. Check out the comments section on any mainstream YouTube video. I don't see why it should be harmful, but I also don't want to bother going on websites where people do that... unless it's really entertaining the way they do it.

We live in a world where Hillary Clinton has an article on her campaign website attempting to link Donald Trump to white supremacy through Pepe the frog. Its time to give up this politically correct "everyone has an equal opinion" BS. We NEED to shame people for being stupid. I don't care if you find it on YouTube, the campaign trail, or the grocery store. We have to stop this. No more idiots who don't even know Biden is the VP running around shooting their mouths off about how virtuous they are because they believe in global warming or putting tampons in men's bathrooms or whatever. When this shaming comes with a legitimate argument, that's great, but a personal attack isn't necessarily hate, and even when it is, there's nothing wrong with hating stupidity. You can't explain stupid is to stupid does, so don't blame people for not wanting to waste their time trying.
