Hey guyz, I bought a 2.5" 500gb hdd for my macbook, and was wondering if there was a way to give it smart status? Is that something I can install on this hdd? Thanks!

Disk Utility will give a pass/fail indication.

For more detail, I've been using: smartctl and SMARTUtility.

Everyone should avoid using Disk Utility to check hard drive health. Almost any failing drive will show a "verified" status. Use something that shows all information such as SMART Utility.

I reformated it and in disk utility it says S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported

Oh I just read one of the links for SMARTutility and it seems that smart status is built in by the manufacturer.. Thanks anyway guys.

If the drive is in an external case (Firewire or USB2), the SMART status is not accessible. Otherwise, you should at least get the "verified" status.
