If you are talking about a 6th generation Classic, there is nothing you can do. It is only going to recognize 128 gb no matter what card you use. I don't know about a replacement hard drive. If you are talking about the 7th generation Classic you can update it. When I upgrade (usually due to a drive failure) I always go SSD. Price wise it is the best value. I do the upgrade of $65 (not including parts) You can supply the parts or I can supply them

It is a iPod classic model a1238 160 gb. MC297/LLA. I believe that this is a 7th generation. It is a brand new one I just bought a few months ago as a backup for my existing iPod. I would definitely be interested in having you do the work as well as supplying the parts. How large of an SSD can be upgraded? Please let me know how I can contact you

Did you get this done yet? I can do anywhere from 256GB upgrade to 1TB. PM me.

I have done this to a 5.5th (enhanced) gen iPod Video/Classic and I can personally tell you that the memory can go much bigger than the number stamped on the back. According to Tarkan's site, the iPod Classic line is limited to 128GB hard drives except for the 160GB 7.5th gen Classic and the 5th and 5.5th gen iPod Video/Classic. You CAN put larger drives in the iPods with limitations but they will only recognize up to 128GB. In addition I highly recommend that you buy the HDD adapter from Tarkan as he makes the best and most commonly used ones. Also he sells 3 products: HDD to mSATA (for use with solid state drives), HDD to CF (for use with Compact Flash cards), and CF to SD (for use in conjunction with the HDD to CF adapter). Which parts you will need entirely depends on the target storage space that you are trying to achieve. If you tell me how much memory you are shooting for I can compile a list of everything you will need to order with links. I can also help you pick out an iPod that would work well with this project off of eBay. I, personally, have done this mod on a 5.5th gen Video/Classic and used Tarkan's HDD to CF and CF to SD adapters in order to run my iPod off of a 64GB SD card. I have also done other enhancements to this iPod such as replacing the click wheel, replacing the battery, replacing the screen, and replacing the front face, all in a custom color scheme that I chose. I have included the link to Tarkan's store below.

hi, got the 5.5 gen, need to replace with ssd. i too old to mod but pretend to be audiophilac. i am in chicago, can i bring to you my ipod 5.5 with 80GB. need to replace the HD to compatible SSD. thanks

I did a ipod classic 5.5 80gb video model upgrade using Tarkans iflash solo SD card board.
Threw in a 200gb sandisk micro sd card (using a micro sd card to full size sd card adapter.
Also upgraded to a bigger battery from ifixit at the same time. Thought might as well, whilst I got it open.
Then restored it using iTunes and installed rockbox after for dual boot use.

Working like a charm, formatted to fat32 showing 183gb.
Battery life is 10hrs more now, its much faster overall, responds instantly to fast forward/rewind and boots a touch quicker too. Best upgrade ever!

Can anyone help me - I'm trying to convert an ipod classic 5th gen to ssd - and I've taken out the HDD and put in one of Iflash's boards for a CF to go in and changed the cable etc - I can't get itunes to install on a CF card or an SD card with a converter. Itunes goes through the motions of restoring the ipod but then it doesn't seem to take and at the end of the process the Ipod still tells me I need to restore! The computer is reading the card and I can transfer pictures etc to the ssd memory. I've tried 4gb cf cards as well as larger 64gb micro sd - and the result's the same. I've tried a microdrive from an old ipod nano - and that installs perfectly! I think there's a formatting problem - and have tried Iflash's fix of repartitioning the card etc but it doesn't help! I've wasted loads of time and some money to no avail at the moment - and am about to give up - and put the old hdd back in! Thanks

Is there any way to get a 1TB SSD in a late gen ipod classic 160GB? And what parts would I need?

Hi,
I recommend a 4-microSD-to-ZIF-Adapter by Tarkan, 4 256GB microSD Cards by Sandisk or Samsung and a new battery.

Torsten
