I've had the same problem. But finally the solution, for me, was simple.
First, i've recovered the the "connect to itunes" mode.

As said before, once you install the new Xcode 6 beta 6, it brings changes to itunes 12 that repairs this crash problem.

So, install Xcode 6 before by downloading it and opening it once.

Having the exact problem with the original post, and I'm downloading Xcode 6 beta 5 to try out this suggestion. At the same time I'm getting my PC ready in case this does not work.

Tiny umbrella

I had a similar problem.

I;m running yosimite beta and just updated to itune 12. When i plugged in my iphone 5S it crashed my phone and kept telling me to plug into itunes.

Easch time I connected my 5S via USB to my Mac/itunes 12 - itune 12 would close/crash.

the way i fixed this was by downloading http://blog.firmwareumbrella.com/

I'd been wrestling for 3 hours with my iphone 5s stuck on "plug to itunes" and this worked.

I also tried xcode_6 and others versions of tinyumbrella but this http://blog.firmwareumbrella.com worked best.

This is what the version I used looked like

Hope this helps

Thank you devinthomas !!!

You saved my life!

Karma +1 ! :D

I actually just encountered the same issue a few hours ago and freaked out before just focusing and using some troubleshooting skills.

  1. Install AppZapper (here) and open preferences to allow the removal of Apple apps
  2. Remove iTunes 12
  3. Delete your old iTunes library information from the Music folder
  4. Download & install iTunes 11 ((here)
  5. Proceed with install/restore of iOS 8
  6. Upgrade back to iTunes 12 in Mac App Store
  7. Breathe. You saved your phone.

Just a notice - I experienced the same thing just now, but was able to exit from recovery using TinyUmbrella. That way you won't need to go through the restore, but just downgrade iTunes instead.

I eventually used TinyUmbrella to escape from the recovery mode, and worked perfectly. Decided that i would just wait ten more days till the GM version comes out. :) Thxs

This iTunes bug is known so there should be a fix for it soon. It crashes when the phone is in recovery mode irrespective of the IOS version.

I did this and everything worked out fine for me. Didn't run into any problems with my iPhone restoring to iOS 8.

Has anyone had the same problems with the iPad?

Worked perfectly for me, iTunes 12 crashing overtime I tried to restore phone, used TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode, back to normal.

Will wait the few days for the GM release before I try to restore my phone again. Thanks!

Whew! Breathing... thanks!

I posted about this in the Yosemite forum and was directed here, thank goodness. Installing the latest version of Xcode worked for me as well. I had Beta 3 but upgraded to Beta 7 last night and all is well.

It seems the problem is purely iTunes 12 - it crashes out during the final steps of the upgrade / restore leaving the iPhone in recovery mode. The fix is simple. Don't uninstall iTunes 12, simply take a copy of iTunes 11 from your Time Machine backup, copy it to the desktop, and run it, pressing and holding alt as you double click and choose to create a new iTunes library.

Restore your iPhone in iTunes 11. Then whilst still in there do the upgrade again from within 11. Once you get passed the activation and the device is ready to use with iOS 8, quit 11 and go back to 12 and launch with alt, choosing your original iTunes library.

Restore your backup onto your phone via 12 and sync as normal. I actually restored my backup via 11 too, but when it tried to sync, of course I was in the dummy new library that had no apps. Quit the sync and restarted it under 12 and all was well.

I went through this for the second time last night.

My iPad 2 also caused iTunes to crash while I tried to upgrade to iOS 8 from 7.1.2. My solution was to install Xcode 6 beta 7 and try again. It worked and I just completed my iOS upgrade and the iPad is working fine.

I am using Yosemite Developer Preview 7 and Xcode 6 beta 7.

  1. Exit iTunes - it's probably already crashed :/
  2. Download and use RecBoot to take iPad out of recovery mode
  3. Disconnect iPad
  4. Install latest beta of Xcode
  5. Make sure Xcode is completely installed (will take a while)
  6. Launch Xcode at least once - again, make sure it loads completely and installs all components
  7. Exit Xcode
  8. Restart iTunes
  9. Plug iPad back in
  10. Try your restore again

Works for me!

Is there a potential for similar issues in itunes 11.3 or should I be okay if I give it a shot?

I started to follow the app zapper instructions and it appears that
iTunes 11.4 is out now. I may try that in my Yosemite.

The release notes say it supports syncing with iOS 8.

Hi. This worked for me, however, I can't seem to update itunes back to version 12. Any suggestions?

I hop Xcode works for me. It will take 22 minutes to download.

I tried zapper and removed iTunes 12 and installed iTunes 11. I tried launching 11 without the iPhone attached and it said my libraries are not compatible and demanded I redownload 12.

Went to the PC and iTunes said I need to restore. OK. Firmware download 6 hours?!? Tried downloading Tinyumbrella and the program complained about not liking the version of Java even though that was the most current.

What a pain.

If you have a VM (Parallels in my case), you can use the Windows version of iTunes (no need of 11.4) as I did. It works just fine. :)

Simple fix

1. Unplug iphone
2. Hold home and power button until it shuts off
3. hold home button and plug back in
4. iphone will enter recover mode in iTunes 12 beta
5. select iOS 8 GM
