Well all the people who have successfully gotten Vertex 3's working in their 2011 MBPs must be a lot luckier than me. I returned my first one this afternoon and just tried installing the V3 on MBP #2...same result. Can't complete the installation-just dies with various errors. Did PRAM and SMC resets...nothing. I guess they just do not like these SATA3 SSDs. Oh well. Of course what sucks is since I bought from Newegg I can't just return it.

Wow, you've been really unlucky - so sorry to hear about your troubles. I put a Vertex 3 240GB in my 2.2GHz 2011 15" MBP with no issues at all, didn't reset anything either. Restored from a Time Machine backup rather than a fresh install. There's another thread about SSDs and beachballing suggesting that the SATA cables vary between models - perhaps that could be a factor in your case too?

Can you not just return it for another? Maybe you simply have a faulty drive.

The Vertex? Yes, I can exchange (although newegg is OOS so I'd have to wait until they have some). But I really don't think it's the drive because I tried it with an Intel SSD (510 series) and had the exact same issues.

To the person who mentioned about doing a single-pass overwrite-I thought that was discouraged with SSDs because it's unnecessary wear and also could "fool" it into thinking it was actually completely full?

Early 2011 17'' MBP + Vertex 3 120GB

No issues to report. I did the fresh install with defaults and all I can say is WOW:

I have been waiting to make the jump back to a Mac for my Photography work for some time now. I am very glad I waited for the refresh instead of picking up a 27'' iMac a few months back.

i received my 240gb vertex 3, and had a little hiccup before i got it to work. i did a fresh install of 10.6 from a 10.6 disc, not the disc that came with the 2011 15" 2.3ghz i7. got it to install fine, but got a kernel panic after the apple logo came on. did the super drive in extenal usb the first time. did the remote disc install the second. did the computer in target disc mode (btw, i got two icons, firewire and thunderbolt! i guess there is thunderbolt target disk mode...). then i reinstalled the superdrive i removed for optibay, and used the os install disc that came with the lappy. all is fine now. wasted a lot of time.
