so there is no way of using the disk utilities to partition up the harddisk to have the mac part and a window part, then install windows "direct" onto the window partition and to have OSX on the other?

thought that could be done, or has been done before.

That's exactly what Boot Camp does... It just makes it much easier for you.

If I use disk utility instead of bootcamp does that mean that I can resize the partition as and when like you cant do with bootcamp?

Yes, you can resize your partitions using Disk Utility.

You must not change the Mac partition(s) from the Windows installer.
