Installing wireless card driver on a 1400, help!

You should upgrade to Communicator 4.8.

Are you suggesting that I upgrade to 4.8 because that version introduced 128-bit encryption? Here's what's been going on with 4.7:

1. PB 1400 is running 8.6 and Netscape Communicator 4.7. Orinoco 7.2 Control Panel says the TrueMobile 1150 card is a "third-party Gold card," which to me meant that it could handle 128-bit encryption. Put a 26-digit hexidecimal encryption into the TrueMobile 1184 wireless base set as an Access Point only (with DHCP off since it is going through ZyZEL Prestige 660 wired gateway to ethernet DSL) and lost connection because I could put only 24 digits for encryption on the TrueMobile 1150 card. Called Dell...they told me to drop back to 40-bit encryption with only 10 digits. Set 40-bit on 1150 and 1184 and could not restore connection. (Cap Lock was not accidentally turned on, and yes, the 10 digits were the same.)

My setup is working *only* because there is no encryption. Communicator 4.7 does not support 128-bit...that came with version 4.8, but there is some reason that I didn't upgrade back then, though I can't remember why. I asked Dell if, with the serial number of the TM 1150 card, they could tell me if it was really a Gold card. After learning that I got it from eBay (and not Dell), they said they could not. Since the 1150 card can take only 10 encryption digits, does that mean it is not a Gold card? I'd like to have *some* sort of encryption, but right now any kind of encryption kills my wireless connection to the internet, though the 1150 and 1184 can still "see each other" and show a strong signal in the Orinoco Control Panel.

2. With the wireless base station turned off, my primary G4 can print through an AsanteTalk bridge going through a CNET switchbox through which all this ethernet DSL wired/wireless stuff goes. With it on, the G4 sends the job to the LaserWriter, but nothing ever comes out. Before messing with this wireless stuff, "System Status" panel when communicating with the ZyXEL showed my ISP as the System Name. Now, the System Name is Thurletta's Computer, so this has something to do with a change I made to "somebody's" IP address. I don't really care about printing from the PB 1400, but I'd like to understand why the wireless base station kills printing from the G4 wired setup.

3. The final question is really a software one. Communicator 4.7 was already on the PB 1400 and it was recommended somewhere because it worked well with 8.6 in wireless setups, especially if StyleSheets were turned off. But, I can't check email online at my ISP because Communicator is not a recommended browser. Don't want to download email to PB. ISP recommends IE, Mozilla and Safari.

I use Opera on the main G4. Any small-footprint but feature-rich browser recommendations for the PB 1400, and why did you suggest upgrading to Communicator 4.8?

I was just saying if you're using 4.7... 4.8 is a bug-fix, speed-improvement release. It was also the final of the 4.x series before the jump to Netscape 6.

Same machine, different problem

For complicated reasons I, too, am trying to install a wireless PC card into my Powerbook 1400c (OS 7.6.1, 48MB memory). I bought a PC Card from eBay, Orinoco Gold, rebranded as 2Wire, which came with an install CD. The drivers on the CD require OS 8.1, so don't work.
I downloaded the Orinoco driver 6.0 and followed the installation procedure carefully (about 6 times) but I always get the same problem. Double clicking on the PC Card icon gives me the Appletalk window, connected via Remote Only.
Opening the Wavelan driver control panel called "Wavelan Setup" results in a message to insert the Wavelan PC card (which is inserted) followed by "The control panel Wavelan Setup cannot be used with this computer."

Has anyone got any ideas?

2Wire cards are not rebranded cards (even though they claim to be). They will not work with Mac OS 7-compatible versions of the drivers. You have to have an actual Lucent WaveLAN, or Proxim Orinoco card to use it with Mac OS 7, or you have to upgrade to Mac OS 8 (sadly). Farallon Skyline cards are also an option.

I think you'll need to upgrade to 8.6. I successfully got a TrueMobile 1150 Gold card and a TrueMobile 1184 wireless router (both also from eBay) to work with my existing wired router and my PB 1400cs/117 running 8.6 w/a Sonnet G3 upgrade card. Be sure to read http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html because I found that to be extremely helpful. Instead of Wavelan Setup, I think I downloaded something from the Dell/TrueMobile site that allowed me to communicate with the card and the router to finally get things going. Once you are up and running wirelessly, be sure to get iCab for your browser. It uses very little memory and solved the problem I was having with Communicator 4.7 always running out of memory. I still don't have encryption (wouldn't work at all), but otherwise things are going okay.
Also, check out the MacObserver Forum http://www.macobserver.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=297028#297028 lots of discussion about this there as well. Good luck!
