Intel 510 SSD Review Out w/ benchmarks

where exactly do these 510s go in intels g3 lineup?

are these enterprise, value, m-class?

I believe they're supposed to "enterprise" due to their speeds, but they're using MLC flash. I'd call them prosumer SSDs. I'm really hoping Intel releases updated X25-E's at a cheaper price though. I'd really like some cheaper SLC SSDs.

was really hoping they'd be up for sale right now... really testing my patience (since i barely have any)

People have already said it doesn't work with 3rd party SSDs, hurray for closed systems!
At this point its assumed thats only during the beta. Expectations are that it will be supported under the release version for all SSDs.

And this Intel drive is getting killed by the Vertex 3... Its not even close!

so where would you rank these in expected performance of all the G3s that are being launched?

middle-tier?

Honestly, I can't say. I've been waiting for the 510 not necessarily for speed (since I have to have Whole Disk Encryption) but for cheaper size and maybe built in encryption.

I haven't really been keeping up with other drives, though the article above lists the 510 as just behind the Vertex 3 to varying degrees.

Price. 615$ for 250GB doesn't sound very appealing. 240GB Vertex 3 will be 500$

Not to mention, New MBP buyers have a BTO option of $600-650 for this (depending on the MBP flavor).

Not the same specs mind you, but it will fall under Apple's warranty along with the rest of the macbook for 3 years (assuming AppleCare).

Nope... 3rd party SSD's still have a long way to go. Double the capacity to 500gb at these prices then we're on to something.

I don't get why there are such expectations? I bet 10.7 will come and go, and TRIM will only be supported on SSDs Apple sells. Matches perfectly with an Apple closed ecosystem, where Apple demands total control. And Apple hasn't made friendly statements toward 3rd party HDDs before.

I find such expectations just silly by now. Some kind of denial thing "oh no, apple can't be doing this". When it's just a standard thing coming from Apple.

Just grab brand XYZ with the new sandforce controller then :)

I would, but apart from the Vertex 3, what else has been announced and will be available soon?

Intel really screwed up the pricing on these things, IMHO. They clearly perform worse than the new Sandforce-drives (well, the Vertex 3) - see also Anand's review. The 510's selling points should be 1) Intel reliability, as compared to OCZ tomfoolery, and 2) price. 1) might still work, but the Marvell controller doesn't inspire confidence. 2) is ridiculous; this thing is more expensive than the Vertex 3 will presumably be.

Intel's only advantage is that their drive is available in stores right now. That's very disappointing. As someone who's in the market for a new SATA-III SSD, I now feel kind of lost. Should I overpay for Intel's lackluster 510? Should I wait (but how long?) for the Vertex 3, in spite of OCZ's terrible behavior towards their customers? What else is there?

Most SSDs have 3-year or longer warranty as a standard. No need to spend extra $ to get longer coverage.

OWC has already announced they will be making a SF-2000 Sandforce (SATAIII) drive and I would be willing to bet vendors that currently use the current Sandforce SATAII controllers will be coming out with their own version of the new product. CEBIT is this week and I think we will see some products announced there.

OCZ Vertex 3 has already been benchmarked by Anand and at least G.Skill is releasing Phoenix II lineup.

I was under the impression that the Vertex 3's would hit the market once Cebit is over in a couple days, ie next week? Of course, I could be wrong though...
