So much for only a spec bump with no media event :D My guess is that they might have a new MBP on hand to show off the technology.

I agree. No apple store in my area (though one would think there should be) but I plan on ordering on release anyhow.

We don't need no stinking media event!

COME ON THURSDAY

Well this doesn't mean it is making it to the MBPs. My guess is it won't.

Any reason why you think a technology that Apple pressured Intel to develop won't show up in the MBP's expected to be released on the same day?

So if there is LightPeak on the new MBPs - what are we going to use it for? Or is this more of a wait for compatible devices to appear thing?

So I would imagine there will soon be a Lightwire cable to connect your iphone or ipod to your new lightpeak enabled computer... all we need is a cable... and wow sync would be fast!

I'll be shocked if Light Peak goes anywhere..... looks ridiculously costly for 90% of USB applications out there. In an industry where a freebee component or HDMI cable is a rare sight due to cost concerns (A bluray player i bought came with composite cables!!!), I expect consumer devices adoption to be at a snail pace/never happen.

Maybe the copper version might have a slight chance.

Cool,
Now I just hope soon to see a card to add lightpeak on my MacPro.

I just bought the 6-Core Westmere and was waiting out "Light Peak" since it was demonstrated on a Mac Pro in 2008. A PCIe card for external devices would be nice but I want to see full system integration, connecting everything from internal SATA/Optical drives, replacing USB/FireWire/Display port with one simple controller. In due time.

maybe they will demonstrate the new technology on a new mbp on thursday? ;)

Not just Apple. Sony too so I we'll see lightpeak stuff from them as well.

I guess new cinema displays are also expected now too.

I really don't think cost is why you didn't get an HDMI cable and I'm not sure why you think LightPeak cables are going to be ridiculously expensive.

That's no cost cutting strategy. That's a scheme to get more money out of the consumer. Go to your local retailer and you'll find HDMI or component cables for at least $30 and usually into the $50 range. The Xbox 360, PS3, and Blu Ray players all don't come with HDMI or even component cables so that the retailer or some 3rd party can make a profit off of you. Microsoft was actually nice enough to give you the component cable and even an HDMI cable in their high-end 120GB model. Even with the Wii, I've seen Best Buy mark up the cables from $30 to $35 to $50 at some point. Nintendo's MSRP? $29.99. Same deal with printers; they don't include the USB cable while the retailer marks up prices on their USB cables.

Now, go to Amazon or Monoprice.com and check the HDMI cable prices. Not even 10 bucks. It's business, man.

And now hopefully you will buy your cables from Amazon or Monoprice in the future ;)

Judging by the look of the connector, couldn't an LP socket accept a USB plug?

Supposedly that is the current plan or a possible style. It should be possible to have a hybrid USB/LightPeak port on a computer. Hopefully Apple picks up this design and that way we can also get the slightly-more-accepted USB 3.0. They could probably use the USB port itself for powering devices while using the optical ports for the data I/O.

Intel will hopefully have more details with more of the specs hammered out. It may be potentially awesome. Potentially.

what can it be used with currently?

Great news. But, doesn't your device also have to support light peak as well like your iphone, iPad or HDD?

Not trying to ruin the excitement, but no device uses light peak at this point. Probably because it's not out yet...

So if there is LightPeak on the new MBPs - what are we going to use it for? Or is this more of a wait for compatible devices to appear thing?

This would be my question too: what devices are currently available that would make use of LightPeak/LightWire if indeed it is introduced in the anticipated launch of the new MBP's this Thursday???
