I take it you have never read the horrid conditions that 19th century US had or how it was possible for the military to gun down women and children - look up Ludlow, Colorado 1914 some time.
I don't know what your point is. The rest of the world in 1914 was worse off by a lot. It's also not 1914 anymore.

And in Ludlow, Colorado, it's not that simple. We have no idea what the "violence" between strikers and the National Guard meant. Supposedly the strikers had a hostage, on account of whoever wrote the history. Someone could summarize the 2021 Capitol riots as, "federal officers killed two protestors." So a quick lookup isn't enough reading.

'Socialism'? I think you have no clue what it looks like, and how much the very rich in this country rely on it, and on you not knowing what it really means.
If you mean to suggest I don't understand the problem with corporate handouts, my other posts talk about that. If you don't want to bother reading them, which is understandable, then there's no basis for talking condescendingly.

You’re making a mistake. There’s not one ”conservative” movement in the US anymore than there’s one “liberal“ movement. You’re talking about two different groups of people who vote for vaguely the same political party.
They vote for one party, the Republican party. The Democrat party has its own self-contradictions too. Even if you pick only one representative in either party, in many cases, he will contradict his own values. But it's "us vs them," so sadly you have to pick one of the two parties if you want a voice.

(Although, when it comes to just the voting part, imo it's not much more of a waste to vote third party than it is to vote at all.)

A big LOL, on how a discussion of how Intel et al failed in the business of chips somehow brings out the raging xenophobes and nativists. I wrote a parody of their arguments, but then, since the last few years apparently parody is dead, because the reality is already so twisted it’s beyond being parodied.

And that’s how we get Intel’s failure and shameless handout requests all being the fault of illegals picking veggies in the field. Unbelievable.

Every generation it’s the same story. Always the fault of the immigrant, legal or not. It used to be the Irish, all problems down to Irish drinking and the pope. Tons of illegal Irish, btw., but then they got to be cops and started beating up on the newer immigrants. The Chinese - those guys worked too hard or something building railroads and the infrastructure of this country so gotta exclude them and have killing riots against them. Then it was the Japanese, because they made better and more efficient cars that Motown was too lazy to make, so let’s attack the Japanese. It never ends. Today it’s the illegal Latinos who pick stuff in the fields that “very legal patriotic” Maga hats are too lazy to pick. Gotta go deport the Mexicans so that Intel can finally make chips that can compete against he Taiwanese or something - forget logic.

Oh, and the complaints about the illegals taking jobs, LOL. How about the legal immigrants who take jobs, or the engineers on legal visas - legal, so we can‘t make that argument “illegal”... but, but, but - brown! Asian! Wronguns!

Go to the top universities and take a look at the STEM or engineering classes - not too many MAGA hats wanting to do the hard science study. For some reason a lot of Asian and brown faces. Oops.

How in the world, did we get from discussing the utter failure of the - mostly white - execs at the chip companies, to how it’s all the fault of the darn foreigners and Democrats? The human mind never ceases to amaze. And maybe it’s that mindset that is at the bottom of this utter business failure - promote the incompetent bros and guys ”who look like us” and put them in charge and then SURPRISE - failure! Quick, blame the illegal lettuce pickers!

You're adorable. But you are still wrong. Adorably wrong. If what you say is true, then why does America have borders? Mexico and Canada shared borders with the USA. Bor-der-z. Say it with me. you-->🐇
What borders existed when America was founded?

The answer is already settled. America was always an open-borders country. It is something Trump tried desperately to change in order to protect his nativist supporters, but unfortunately for him, America is controlled by us open-borders liberals.

And you can be certain we will change the language and other cultural values.

We know what the violence between strikers and the National Guard "meant" - it meant 21 people needlessly dead including women and children.

What was the name of this supposed hostage? Never mind the very idea to shoot into a group of people (with a freaking machine gun) who maybe have a hostage is so dumb on so many levels that it sounds like an after the fact story cooked up to excuse the violence used. Just like the claim that the Bonus marchers of 1932 were goaded into action by "communists".

How about the fact that if the US government thinks it is prudent they can still force sterile you as "Three Generations of Imbeciles Are Enough"? How about experimenting on its own citizens ala MkUltra? Or the joy that was the Tuskegee Syphilis Study which finally ended...in freaking 1972. Can you say "Contra", Neighbor? The reality it our government has as many flaws as any other...they are just different flaws.

I don't know what happened. Maybe the strikers killed more people. Maybe they were a threat. There's more to look at than the number of dead on one side.

Our government has flaws. It's not as many as any other.

What open-border liberals? I don't see any open borders, haven't seen them my entire life. Wake me up when you succeed (and I hope you succeed only in that).

We "know" what happened. The Colorado National Guard used a machine gun on women and children in 1914. There is no way you can spin that as justifiable.

To get this back on track, why should the government be effectively bailing out businesses that made brain dead decisions? There was no bail out for IBM when it became clear they messed up on the PC revolution and while they are not what they were they are still around.

Incentives? In the idealized world of Yankee Dood It (1956) the only incentive a business should have is to make a better product at a cheaper price....not a government backed breaks. "A manufacturer who sticks to old equipment cannot compete, and must fail. To survive, he must persuade people to risk savings in his business. He can then buy new equipment, increase production, and show a profit."

Never mind by Epic's loopy logic Intel and AMD have a "monopoly" on the x86 architecture. The total illogic of this should be clear to anyone.

I remember Intel railing against RISC when they were caught flat footed as the industry moved on. Fad? Maybe, but I think RISC did make contributions to furthering the processor market. I grieved when Sun died. I laughed at Intel's flaws that have been exposed over the years. How can a company release a product with some of the bizarre problems their chips have had. Some processors have 'errata' that could fill a standard romance novel paperback book. Errors aren't impossible to avoid, but some seem to be forced errors.

And AMD, when everyone thought them all but dead, has once again emerged from the fire, Phoenix like, to eat Intel's lunch.

Intel probably really needs the money, but what they actually need is a 'brain transplant'. They need new management, they need a new 'groove', a new mantra, a new outlook. They need to focus on what they did back in the day, and 'think different', and 'think better'. Can they do it? If they can't, they may not survive. Being the source for niche chips only gets you so far. Just like demands for money, and once the cash is gone, what next. More demands? More flouncing? More dramatic fainting spells? More threats?

Should the government just give up and buy Intel? Then they could fire their management, and maybe save Intel?

It's amazing that the government, one of the last that doesn't fund basic research, ends up having businesses begging for bailouts because of their bad behavior and brain dead management. Begging for money makes more sense to investors than risking their money on funding that basic research.

Fund Basic Research! Don't fund Incompetence! Don't fund Complacency! Don't fund Investors!

I've worked for the government...that would be worse. "I'm the government. I'm the government. I'm the reason nothing works." isn't a meme; it's reality. Businesses are designed to make a profit...the exact opposite of what a government does.

Which is EXACTLY why a 'businessman' should NEVER run government. A businessman with a history of failures especially so.

The minute government is run as a business, someone wins, and most lose. Running government has to be as blind as can be. No one gets out ahead. No one is the chosen. That's what makes the inequality now so dire, and hard to stop. Too many millionaires and billionaires are in Congress, and they are treating it like a career, and love giving money to their friends.

The encroachment of corporations into running business functions is especially destructive and distressing.

Yeah, this whole business of “run the government like a business” is the dumbest thing yet from the screaming ignoramuses who fancy themselves tough realists.

The government is by definition not a business - you cannot run the judiciary like a business or the military or the security apparatus, that way lies extreme corruption and dictatorship. Helping the disabled and the less fortunate is not what business does. All this is what a government does.

The dire consequences of putting businessmen in charge of government is there for all to see - extreme corruption, when they operate as businessmen. And 45 was an example of the greatest corruption we’ve seen yet in that office, complete with personal enrichment, nepotism and cronyism.

What we need desperately in this country is education in civics. Every school kid should learn about how the government is structured and operates, the basics of our form of government and our civic responsibilities in additon to rights. Of course, when one side is all in on keeping as much of the populace as possible ignorant and uneducated, this is a hopeless task.

And btw. I’m by no means exempting Democrats from criticism. They’re often as corrupt as all get out, and ignorant to boot. Just look at Biden getting ready to grease the palms of all those corporations. We really need to get the money out of politics to the greatest degree possible. We have a legislature and executive branches that are bought and paid for by corporatoins, and the common good is getting shafted. Businesses should be nowhere near government if you want to avoid corruption and the choosing of winners and losers. One can dream.

It is nothing compared to the behavior in the Gilded Age. 'Swedish meatballs, made with real Swede...at least that is what we think fell into the floor grinder this week.'

I don't know. The Grant Administration was pretty bad. This and all the deregulation insanity is why I say we are in Gilded Age 2.0.

Yes, and the peasants seem to be ignorant of where this is all headed. Just this morning, someone on CNN was talking about the rise of the extremist GOP, and how, in the last election many hard right areas of the country actually turned 'blue'. It seems that when the peasants (GOP voters) get an idea of the spending cuts and knifed social programs, they aren't on board with the GOP. They realize that, and are using gerrymandering and intimidation to try to keep the peasants unaware of what will happen when they assume complete control of the country. People don't realize that there is a 'kill the Constitution' clause where if one party controls enough state legislatures, they can, and will call for a 'Constitutional Convention', and literally rewrite the founding documents this great country was founded on. (Right wing groups were planning for a ConCon in the wake of the 2020 elections, so sure they would win, and the cadre of industries and freaks lined up to distort the Constitution in their favor was endless. Watch the 2022 elections. If their Gerrymandering and voting disenfranchisement is successful, they might be able to pull it off within days of 'winning')

Imagine a hard right, theological friendly, corporate owned GOP rewriting the Constitution! Imagine being able to be sued for slandering a corporation for calling them out for their hypocrisy and crimes. Imagine a national religion, and all citizens being required to attend and pledge their allegiance. Imagine being jailed for 'slandering' a politician. Imagine no environmental laws, and no civil rights. Gilded age? It would be a New Dark Ages. It would be like the post-Shah era of Iran, ironically.

Intel won't ahve to worry about their income. The majority of the citizens won't be able to afford computers, internet, cell phones, etc. The economy will crash, but the rich will float to the top. Yikes...
