Odd timing on the announcement. Intel must not be too thrilled with the pre-CES leaks from HP, Alienware, ASUS, MSI, and Santech. Some Sandy Bridge laptops are already on sale!

Now my question is will Apple go back to using the notebook version of Sandy Bridge in the iMac as they did with Core 2 or will they stick to using the desktop version?

Intel IGP Not better that 320m

It's performs about 27% worse that 320m when details at medium. It only marginally surpasses it at low settings according to Anandtech.

The question is... Can Apple use Nvidia or AMD IGPs or are we locked down like Apple was with Arrandele?

Has anyone heard Anandtech say something negative about a new Intel release?

Still going through the articles but he smashes the naming system, again.

Intel promised that the marketing would all make sense one day. Here we are, two and a half years later, and the Core i-branding is no clearer. At the risk of upsetting all of Intel Global Marketing, perhaps we should return to just labeling these things with their clock speeds and core counts? After all, it’s what Apple does—and that’s a company that still refuses to put more than one button on its mice. Maybe it’s worth a try.

How about 23.976 fps playback? Sorry guys, even raking in $11 billion a quarter doesn’t make you perfect.

Here’s the sitch, most movie content is stored at 23.976 fps but incorrectly referred to as 24p or 24 fps. That sub-30 fps frame rate is what makes movies look like, well, movies and not soap operas (this is also why interpolated 120Hz modes on TVs make movies look cheesey since they smooth out the 24 fps film effect). A smaller portion of content is actually mastered at 24.000 fps and is also referred to as 24p.

In order to smoothly playback either of these formats you need a player and a display device capable of supporting the frame rate. Many high-end TVs and projectors support this just fine, however on the playback side Intel only supports the less popular of the two: 24.000Hz.

and further down:

How big of an issue this is depends on the user. Some can just ignore the judder, others will attempt to smooth it out by setting their display to 60Hz, while others will be driven absolutely insane by it.

Great news...

Two steps forward, one step back if Apple leaves out dedicated GPU. We're supposed to be moving to GPU for video playback, etc....

No dedicated GPU is fine for MBA and MB, but not MBP!

I believe it is faster than the 320M. But really, the 320M is pretty old now I think as of Jan 2 2011.

It is marginally faster at Low settings and marginally slower at medium settings.

Also, the Sandy Bridge GPU was tested in the Quad Core Sandy Bridge processor which has a graphics clock of 650Mhz/1300 (Turbo). The Sandy Bridge i3 dual core processor which will likely go into the entry level 13" macbook Pro that will clock lower at 650/1100Mhz.

It get worse with the ULV Sandy bridge which clocks at 350/900Mhz.

Another thing I just noticed is that the Quad Cores use DDR3-1600Mhz memory, which the dual cores use 1333Mhz memory which might benefit graphics performance (memory is shared between CPU and GPU).

So overall, the graphics is marginally slower, but of course there a massive boost in CPU Power especially compared to Core 2 Duo. Quite an impressive processor.

I'm sure there will be a dedicated GPU for the 15" and 17" models.

The Intel/Nvidia dispute previously hindering Apple has been resolved, meaning that the next revision will likely feature another Nvidia-based chipset/discrete GPU combo.

Damn. No USB 3.0 until 2012.
Why didn't Intel put USB 3.0 in Sandy Bridge?

Probably because of Light Peak.

The new QuickSync is quite amazing. Sandy Bridge has brilliant video decoding hardware, it even wins high-end discrete GPUs! This brings hardware acceleration into a new level. Although the support for that is quite limited atm but it looks very promising

If this is true then we have nothing to worry about. We'll have good upgrades this year (won't stop people from complaining though).

Interesting point from Tom's hardware:

"I’m also a big fan of Quick Sync. Neither AMD nor Nvidia have an answer to Intel’s decode/encode acceleration, and they’re not expected to any time soon. If you do a lot of video editing or transcoding, an upgrade to Sandy Bridge might be warranted based solely on the time you’ll save by virtue of this feature. Kudos to Intel for getting developer support lined up right out of the gate, too. If the graphics guys could rally the software industry as quickly, we'd already be swimming in CUDA- and APP-accelerated titles."

Wonder when these will find their way into the MBP line?...

It's widely anticipated the the MBP refresh will have Sandy Bridge in them and that refresh is expected to be announced this month or next.

Sandy Bridge + SSD + Optical Driveless 15 Inch MacBook = One hell of a compelling product.

+Lightpeak

If there is no USB3 support its probably because Lightpeak support is already there and intel is prepping to launch it this year. Apple will hopefully add lightpeak in the new macbooks

Really? I love it if this were true.

Any links?

Apple's tricky decision to go with C2D in the Airs still looks sensible. It's all about Ivy Bridge and the ULV Sandy Bridges due at the end of the year.

The big question is what exactly does the rumoured settlement between NVIDIA and Intel look like?

Sandy Bridge ULVs are due in few weeks. Only high-end desktop and server SBs are coming in Q4. Ivy Bridge will most likely be released in CES 2012

At least I have my doubts because like two weeks before that rumor, Nvidia officially stated that they are out of the chipset business

That's LV. Though if you have a source I could be wrong.

There's much more than graphics at stake here. The future of supercomputing/high-end compute is too.

The market needs a stronger AMD/ATI and better market support for OpenCL.

The Airs won't be upgraded soon.

I didn't say they will but Apple won't have to wait until the end of this year to get their hands on SB ULVs like you said.

Like many I have big hopes for the new MBPs.

Quad core sounds plausible now but we won't see new MBPs in January unless Apple gets early access to dual core SBs (they are shipping early next month, along with LVs and ULVs)
