Apple today updated its Xserve server line to include Intel processors and other advanced features such as lights-out management and redundant power supplies that business customers require. The base configuration now stands as follows:

- Dual-Dual 2 GHz Xeon 5100 Processors, configurable up to dual-dual 3 GHz.
- 1 GB DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM RAM, configurable up to 32 GB.
- 24x Combo Drive, configurable 8x double-layer SuperDrive
- 2 x 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet
- Built-in ATI Radeon X1300 with 64MB of GDDR3 SDRAM; mini-DVI to VGA adaptor

More details can be found at http://www.apple.com/xserve/specs.html

looks good... great news for the IT people... really customizable.

I'm glad it can take so much memory! Wish I could afford one.

Get one of these with 10.5 and Time Machine and you have an enterprise-class server ready right out of the box backup included. Very nice. It's also nice to see them give the XServe a little more thunder. Some of the XServe updates have been rather quiet updates. Apple could really stand to grow in the IT marketshare and the XServes are awesome computers.

Hey look, no wonder the MacBook couldn't get an X1300, the XServe stole it! *Runs away*

Ok joking aside, this is great news. Transition is now over and done with, so Apple can focus on keeping up with Intel's roadmap.

Holy poo! 32 GB of DDR2 memory! that's crazy. I'm glad they put in a proper videocard. the G5 had 8 MB VRAM...:p

Dual power supplies.

I also noticed that they added redundant power supplies. Don't think that was there before.

Simply put, the XServes are easily the BEST servers on this planet...congrats, Apple..! The 1U machines you've just deployed are more than any other competitor could ever think of..! GO APPLE!

Two new features added today that will really help the Xserve's case in the enterprise market:

1. Dual redundant PSUs (though it's not a standard feature).
2. Lights-Out management hardware, making remote control a whole lot easier and more powerful.

So this means that they are making 10.4 server universal then. Sort of lost in the mix eh?
They already quietly did that at some point. Right now I think it's still the only way to get a standalone retail copy of universal OS X.

I never realised that the old XServe didn't have redundant power supplies and remote management until the keynote! frankly i think apple should be embarrassed that they weren't there before rather than proud they have them now.

I dunno, a 512-cpu SGI could probably give it a run for its money...

ummm Raid anybody?

I know you are all singing the praises here, but with out built in raid it will not see deployment where I am. I do NOT understand apples refusal to put raid in, they are one of the few that still has 3 drives in a 1U server combine this with a $150 dollar SATA raid onboard, and I could see it give Dell and HP a run for their money.

Maybe I justed missed it? If so apple could see more of our dollars..

Its not that hard to set up a RAID with the three hard drive bays on the XServe. We have the first two drives mirrored on our XServe here at work and it works great. You can pull one of the drives and the system will keep running. You just use Disk Utliity to set it up. Of course this is a software RAID, not a hardware RAID like other solutions, which may be what you are looking for.

My first Xserve died a power-supply death. After about a week and a half of fixing the dumb thing, Apple sent me a new one and it's been great ever since.

(of course, it spends it's life doing other things now, so itunesregistry.com doesn't get to use it, anymore. Hopefully i'll get enough donations to buy one of these Xeons)
