With Android's facial recognition unlock feature, you can train the software to recognize variations of your face, including with you wearing your glasses, you looking down, you looking up. Pretty simple to do.

Simpler than just touching 4 or so buttons?

So how do you train the software after you set it up? Like, I log in fine for months, but then I get in a bad car accident, I want to use my device after I am in the hospital but it doesn't reconize me with the scars onmy face, how do you log in and re-train it? Or is there a fallback password option combined with fingerprint or recovery key or something?

Password backup. Same as if you lost your hand hiding behind the chainsaws instead of getting into the running car.:p:D

Just wanted to point out that Apple isn't currently planning on offering any 3D stuff for any upcoming iPhone. All this talk about 3D being fed to the media today is just to get an idea of what consumers feel about it so they can decide if it is worthwhile investing in it or not in the future.

Facial recognition would be one way to deal with the issue of shrinking the bezels on the iPhone. Biometric scanning without the need for a big fingerprint sensor (and presumably Apple's need for top-bottom bezel symmetry) would save a lot of real estate and allow Apple to further shrink the dimensions of the phone.

EDIT: HobeSoundDarryl beat me to it. Well said, HobeSoundDarryl.

At the point where the arm chips for iPhone and iPad are almost doubling in speed every year, Intel needs to pull it's weight with chip speed and stop messing with stuff that will be d.o.a

Every evil twin everywhere: "Excellent!"

My first thought as well. Not to mention that its accuracy must be able to pass in daily situations for it to be useful. Either you record sufficient variants of your face, thereby increasing the risk that it recognises another one’s face, or you accept having to put on your ‘unlock face’ every time.

I like to compare Apple’s Touch ID to Apple’s reluctance on using touchscreens on their laptops, instead using trackpads and multi-touch gestures. Both mechanisms are sensible improvements that go beyond mere demo value. Touch ID provides good security and convenience.

The answer is in the cemetery....

Remember how they were defeating face recognition security with a photo of the person being used to unlock their device? Has this been fixed?

Sounds nice but

i think it will still requires password as backup because if something happens to the person then doesn't have time to rescan the face. Also again won't picture fool the camera?? That's always the biggest concern over this type of technology.

Reports of people able to bypass face recognition in Android by using a photograph that can be easily downloaded in a variety of ways.

Maybe, but this would be a potential top & bottom bezel shrinker. Instead of a button big enough for a typical thumbprint, this would only need a front-facing camera-sized hole. For all those who call for shrinking the bezels, this would be one way to do it.

Or just read the thumbprint over the screen somehow.

The problem with facial recognition is that it doesn't work in the dark, unless you throw out a flash. I'm not going to be having a camera flash me just to verify who I am.

IR camera + IR flash. Problem solved.

No more 3D news…it's too soon…ugghhh.

With facial recognition, if you have a cut on your face, or significant bruise or end up with a scar would that affect the recognition part? Just wondering.

Broken facial bones would, definitely. Significant facial swelling probably would as well. Losing a ton of weight might even do it. I'm sure they would have a back-up password available for such contingencies.

Then you type in your usual password or pin. No one said you have to stop using any other type of password if you are using facial recognition.

As always the proof would be in the pudding, but your face, like your fingerprint - can't be separated/abandoned/replaced by you if the company using it, screws up and allows it to be stolen (unlike passwords).

I'd be very wary of tying my electronic identity (where theft is absolutely rife) to something that is a defining natural characteristic - cause once its stolen, its stolen.

With the Apple fingerprint its contained in the device and only the device, but the rest of the electronic world doesn't work like that and I wouldn't want my fingerprint or face given over to CurrentC etc. for their and their member's careful handling. JMHO...

Like the touch iD failing to recognize finger prints you'll just have to manually enter your passcode
