This was HUGE for Qualcomm and they came to their senses and likely edited their pricing model. Apple wouldn’t have dropped everything if the pricing model stayed the same. Doesn’t make sense.

What do you think Apple's stock would have done if Intel had came out first, saying they're out? Apple needed this at least as much.

This decision allowed Intel to be out. I don’t believe Apple’s stock would have reacted either way, just like it didn’t for the QCOM news.

Qualcomm needed this to be resolved a lot more than Apple and the company is worth 30% more than it was 6 hours ago because of it.

This looks bad.... Could be a sign Intel signalling to others (not just Apple), that 5Gi s doomed..

Intel's been making cellphones chips for some time. If they decided to turn away, then others will follow, which would slowly mean 5G is doomed, Either that, or some other businesses will get all the "joy"

Why would anyone think this is a link to Apple and Qualcomm depute Intel not liking Apple's because i don't think it is... It just same at a weird time.

Intel's cancel of 5G business could of come anytime.

Because contracts and engineering.

Intel doesn't reserve fab space unless it knows it has a customer. Apple has already signed a contract with Intel.

Think for a second. Do you believe the FTC or the DOJ would allow for such a monopoly? Nope.
Although not in the US, Samsung makes their own modems

No, it’s a signal that Intel didn’t invest enough in 5G. Intel has a few hundred 5G patents compared to the thousands that Huawei or Ericsson each have.

I never had any problems with Intel modems, but obviously it’s clear that Qualcomm is making progress, and even Huwaei is becoming a key player in some aspects. Qualcomm needs/wants Apples business.

No. It is more like Apple needs Qualcomm’s chip. Qualcomm wants Appe’s business for sure. Who in the right mind would not. Since Intel is no longer making 5G chips and Apple need Qualcomm, so it makes sense for both party to reach an agreement. The argreemtn however, should be in favor of Qualcomm.

I highly doubt 5G is doomed. And it is ridiculous to think that Intel would be signaling that. It’s not their area of expertise

This makes less than zero sense, considering Apple was the one that was sued. Hope you’re proud of your analysis?

Apple filed their lawsuit in 2017. At the time, Intel’s 5G modem team told the press:

“Expected to ship in commercial customer devices in mid-2019, the Intel XMM 8060 will accelerate deployment of 5G-ready devices.”
Things at Apple and Intel didn’t go as planned.

Suuuure.

Qualcomm has lost every antitrust case so far. EVERY ONE. They couldn’t afford another loss, especially a high profile one with Apple.

Plus Huawei’s CEO said the other day they’d be willing to work with Apple on 5G.

The most likely scenario is a battered Qualcomm staring at another financial and PR loss along with Huawei willing to work with Apple is what caused Qualcomm to cave.

What antitrust case has anything to do with this and Qualcomm has successfully blocked some iPhone sales in China and Germany.

I doubt Huawei’s 5G modem will be available on iPhone since you know Uncle Sam and its friends are trying to block Huawei at all cost. I don’t think Apple would ever adopt Huawei.

So Apple is left with Qualcomm as only option.

I mean why are we arguing who is caved for the argument at all? You guys are defending Apple at all cost simply want Apple to look better and Apple is in stronger position. But this news is good for everyone, so let just be it.

Yeah, QCOM’s stock jumped 30% because they were in the driver’s seat this whole time.

Right now, Apple and Qualcomm supply over 90% of the SoCs for the U.S. If Apple were allowed to buy Qualcomm, it would be one supplier. It’s the same reason why Intel wouldn’t be allowed to buy AMD.
That makes no sense. Apple doesn’t “supply” any SoCs to anyone. Right now Qualcomm sells to its own customers and apple uses its own chips. After any purchase, the same situation would prevail. Indeed, Apple would likely divest Qualcomm’s SoC business since it would have no need for anything other than the broadband business.

Why do they even bother in the mobile space?

Intel should just stick to servers.. and drop desktops/laptops as well.

Let ARM take that over.

ARM will never take over desktop/laptop.

This is a bad bad news to Apple and extremely good news to Qualcom. Expect Apple’s stock price to start sliding down, big.

Zero rationale. Apple is still developing their own SoC modems, period. The 7 year deal that is FRAND related with the Feds making it painfully clear Qualcomm can't double/triple dip anymore has a 2 year requirement and then watch Apple introduce its own FRAND patent standards Modem faster and more reliable than Qualcomm. Qualcomm is on borrowed time.

Yeah, QCOM’s stock jumped 30% because they were in the driver’s seat this whole time.

Because Qualcomm got what they want? Payment from Apple and continuing royalties payment from Apple? This simply means Apple is saying they lost... what else? If not, it is unlikely Apple would pay a single cent to Qualcomm.

The royalties could be less than Qualcomm would hoped for, but in still a good news for Qualcomm.

This is obviously a good news for Qualcomm, that why the stock jump.

For Apple, it just other chip suppliers being signed or dropped. This has no much impact on Apple’s side. It would be bad for Apple if Qualcomm does not agree with terms and Intel cannot supply 5G chips to Apple. That means Apple would need delay their 5G phone, that could negatively impact Apple.

Interesting. I was going to guess that an Apple hater will contort himself into spinning this into yet another Apple-bashing opportunity instead of actually giving a useful, clever, or informative answer. But you do you.

Be careful now. We wouldn’t want you drowning in your apple tears.

Why would it be illegal to court suppliers or get new business?. It's not even unethical. It's business.
Because Intel's been involved in antitrust suits in both the private realm and in front of the US Supreme Court for such practices. AMD was awarded $1.25B as settlement from Intel. Intel's been sued by the FTC as well for their unfair business practices.

If a company is purposefully working out a method to bypass anti-competition laws then they violate the law. I'm not sure how else I could explain this to you. There's a difference between what you may think is fine and what the law dictates.

If Apple worked with Intel to manipulate Qualcomm's bottom line, stock price and punish them unfairly, then they are in for a rude awakening.

Another example would be a gentleman's agreement to reduce competitive practices in a consortium. That's price fixing and it isn't legal. It's what got LCD makers in trouble in the early 2000s and memory makers not long ago. Price fixing sounds innocent and good natures when you explain it as a few companies working together and pushing incremental, small changes while maintaining similar prices, especially if you all belong to a special interests group (consortium). By doing so you maximize profits and don't have to dump much into R&D. Thus your pockets are flush with cash. The consumer foots the higher bill.

Apple, Qualcomm and Intel aren't innocent in any of this. Apple and Intel wanted to possibly punish Qualcomm, and Qualcomm wants to keep getting away with cornering the market and having a fabless system which saves them billions of dollars. All the while pushing component prices on large buyers.

That would be under the assumption Apple saw the Qualcomm mess years in advance to start prepping their own 5g modem and knew Intel would fail.

You completely missed what I said. Qualcomm integrates their baseband on the same chip as the app processor. Intel and Qualcomm, Samsung and Huawei will always provide a discrete chip meaning more cost, size, and power.

Look at video cards. Intel makes their own GPU so they can make integrated video. AMD bought ATI so they could make integrated video. It's the same, no matter what, Apple needs to design or buy the IP for a modem if they want to integrate it with the chip.

That's how Qualcomm got into the Snapdragon processor market: they started with a modem then realized they should put in a beefy CPU and GPU on it, which they designed themselves and ended up with a large share of the Android market. They ended putting others who didn't have that integration, like TI and Analog Devices, out of business.
