“Apple will pay royalties to Qualcomm”

“Settlement includes a one-time payment from Apple to Qualcomm”

Apple is completely quiet on what they got. Makes sense for QCOM to jump.
That can easily be part of the terms. They aren’t giving specifics, including what the payment amount or terms entail.

My point is, QCOM needed this to end, as evidenced by the discount the stock was trading at yesterday versus now. They had every reason to make concessions to Apple and they likely did for it to be over so abruptly.

"Intel this afternoon announced plans to exit the 5G smartphone modem business to instead focus on opportunities for 4G and 5G modems in PCs, internet of things devices, and other data-centric devices."

Maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but what the hell does "internet of things devices" mean??

Didn’t the 6s use Qualcomm modem? I have one and it’s not great where reception is concerned. Striking contrast with my iPhone X using Intel modem, haven’t experienced any issues. Either, glad this is settled. Apple should acquire any patents Intel has on modems and put it towards their project. Hopefully Intel at least work on 5G modem for notebooks.

Qualcomm gets to announce they will be paid royalties, will get a one-time payment from Apple, along with a multiyear chipset supply agreement. All litigation dropped.

Apple, the $900B company, gets to say nothing. Not even to say that the agreement was "updated." Or that the new agreement was "meaningful" or any number of PR platitudes.

QCOM's price had every right to jump high. Any objective observer will be under the impression Apple blinked at the last second.

More disappointing news for Intel. How the mighty has fallen. It's too bad they struggle to compete these days. I'm actually looking forward to what Apple does with ARM processors in future products.

Long term prospects for Intel don’t look good. No 7nm, repeatedly missing desktop and portable CPU roadmaps, missed mobile chip roadmaps, ongoing shoddy integrated GPUs...

The Apple apologists will explain how this was in the Apple master plans and how Qualcomm capitulated to end the lawsuit. This proves exactly the opposite. Apple paid up as they should have.

Another jaded person on MR. I don’t think you will see a lot of that, only people like you who fabricate this reality in your head.

I don’t see many “apologists” claiming Apple won. Apple lost, plain and simple. Not only did they probably settle all past-due payments, but I’m sure quite a bit more on top of it for the “6 year licensing agreement” that I’m sure Apple begrudgingly settled on.

There’s no way to spin it. The only spin I see is people like you immediately on the offensive, attacking people for things they haven’t said yet.

This whole thing does however prove Apples point and purpose behind the lawsuit. Qualcomm has a monopoly on cellular modem technology, both products and licensing. They behave like a pure monopolist, and if you wish to sell any cellular product, you’re forced to accept whatever terms Qualcomm dictates. It’s a sad, bitter taste of reality. Luckily the FCC is separately suing Qualcomm for their monopolist tactics.

Looks like you are not less biased than them, considered you seems sure despite you have no idea or proof that the settlement happened because it Intel leaving the market or if Intel left the market because of the settlement (Apple being their only smartphones client). I am sure the former sounds more logic and believable to you but really, do you have more information or stronger non subjective arguments than the “apologists”?

This is going to be a lot of food for fodder in the tech world news cycle tomorrow with all the talking heads and bloggers giving their twist on the matter.

So I guess this is why Apple decided to settle with Qualcomm.
Tim Cook must be really annoyed at intel at this point. I’m guessing we will be seeing transition to ARM sooner than latter.

And now you know why Apple settled with Qualcomm. They had no chip maker. Apple just got their arse handed to them. Game over. Qualcomm 1 Apple 0. Game. Set. Match. 2019 iPhones will suck with crappy Intel chips. Do not buy, repeat, do not buy a 2019 iPhone. If you bought Qualcomm stocks prior to today, you are going to be rich!!

Its basically internet connected devices that can communicate between each other.
Youtube link below explains it.

I wonder if Apple will be buying up pieces of Intel's modem business/talent. Being in control of making their own would be another one in a long line of steps to have control over their whole technology stack.

Do you think 5G or even 4G is as simple as AirPower?

Can't say I'm surprised.
But the faithful shouldn't worry, Apple is building their own 5G modem(probably, hopefully, well really who knows?)

Sounds like Qualcomm caved, they have been hurting for apple's lost revenue.
Why does it sound like that?
Qualcomm must have known about Intel's 5G development progress and that's why they stood their ground in the conflict vs Apple.
Yeah in the end Qualcomm is the one that won(and future iphone costumers, which is great by me).

Huawei just isn't an option for Apple and I'm guessing, Apple knew Intel wasn't going to be in the game, which is why they settled with Qualcomm.
Keep guessing, you’ll come up with a totally believable fake story with no resemblance to reality.

This is a bad bad news to Apple and extremely good news to Qualcom. Expect Apple’s stock price to start sliding down, big.

Wrong. Watch QCOM rise and Apple stay as they are. Apple had no worries with the settlement. They’ll have no worries with stock for bagging QCOM as a provider again. QCOM will rise for being the sole supplier of Apple.

Thank god their chips absolutely sucked. And now that Qualcomm and Apple have made up we can have a quality product.

hurrah for monopolies! Oh wait... let's see what happens to pricing. BTW the Intel modems are actually pretty ok (have designed with them previously). In practice the Phone Service provider has way more effect on performance than the modem supplier...

Keep dreaming. Qualcomm, who’s lost EVERY antitrust case so far.
You see quite agitated.
If Qualcomm would have been worried about losing to Apple in the US they would have settled ages ago. Not only that but Apple was quite determined to take Qualcomm to court no matter what and were not prepared to accept any compromise with Qualcomm. It obviously didn't work like they hopped.
