not going to happen.

the 11" MBA has a 35w battery
the 13" MBA has a 50w battery
the 13" cMBP has a 63.5w battery
the 13" rMPB has a 74w battery

Now, I know that the the pro is a more powerful computer than the air but that's a LOT more battery required to run the retina screen between the 13" MBA and the 13" rMBP...and more than twice what's in the 11".

I know the 11" screen is smaller and would therefore require less power, but the 11" is every bit as powerful as the the 13" MBA so I just don't see how they could add retina to the 11" without making some serious size and weight changes. And considering the fact that the 11" is clearly marketed towards the ultralight people, they're going to think long and hard before doing that.

The 11" is already suffering from a fairly short battery life as it is, i'm not sure consumers would tolerate much less than 5. I don't think that the reduced power demands of the new chip will compensate the energy required to run a retina screen, even if it is smaller.

As i've said in other threads, whether or not Retina is here to stay, the race for high-res is going to be eternal - so i'm not saying we'll never see it, i just don't think we'll be seeing it in 2 weeks.

Your main argument throughout your post against a rMBA is power yet the title of the thread is talking about the power savings that might be seen by using Intel's new Haswell chip. Maybe that's where the extra rMBA power could be supplied.

I do agree with you that we probably won't see it in two weeks but I don't think power is the issue.

If there was a release of rMBA screens coming soon, I'm sure pictures of them would have leaked out by now. I'm sad because I doubt it will happen until at least next year.

no, my main argument is that the reduced power demand from the updated chip is not going to offset the power cost of running the processor enough to justify the increased power costs of running a retina display, which are substantial.

From the early previews of PC laptops from Computex, it seems several of them are going "retina".

Have you calculated the numbers? What if they surprise us with an IGZO display?

what numbers are there to "calculate" exactly?

i dont know if they've had time to put IGZO displays on there...they were only recently announced and released so obviously none of us know what was going on behind the scene, if anything at all.

IGZO's reduced energy demands are relative. An IGZO "retina" would still use more more power than the current displays and would still cost more energy for the chip.

they might make some upgrades to the screen - increasing contrast etc, but i don't see them going high-res.

that's just a guess based on the info i have, like i said already i'm certainly no "insider"

If real-world improvements in battery life match 50%, i'm sold on an MBA upgrade.

Apparently the top Hashwells will fetch for around the $420 mark.
