obviously it makes sense to release it in april...i think we might be jumping too far ahead of ourselves. intel's roadmap clearly indicates the core solo coming out in q2, so lets just wait and see.

April is in Q2.

I don't see why the new MacBooks couldn't be announced at the anniversary event, or even before then [mid-March...ish] and make part of the anniversary announcement that they have started shipping.

I'm thinking the vPod will steal the spotlight, even if a Mac Mini Media Center is announced.

A really thin layer of the military's new transparent aluminum could work

Super-hard scratch-proof aluminum oxide over OLED sounds pretty next-gen to me.

found this patent application via digg.com. judging by the look of the hands, this could be the real deal.

I'm really starting to think that the multi-point[?] touchscreen/sensitive interface [and possibly at least a preview of the use of "gestures"] is going to be the real star of the anniversary event and that we're going to see it in several products, like the vPod [video Pod?] or mPod [movie Pod?] AND the MacPad [pda/tablet pc killer].

I'm also hoping that they get rid of the "iWhatever" naming convention. Just dump the i from the iMac already and do the same fo the iPod. The accessory manufacturers can keep using it [iHome], I don't care.

Apple should just focus on "Mac" and "Pod" products until new stuff comes along.

you speak for all photographers? are you a professional?

I'm no professional photographer, but based upon what I know about JPEG compression, and given how lossy it is, if a "professional" photographer uses it, he doesn't have much experience with anything else - not film, not RAW, hell, not even PNG (the reason that JPEG is preferred to PNG in consumer-level cameras is because the file size is smaller, at the cost of some lossiness even at the highest quality settings).

This would be the equivalent of replying to someone who says "Professional musicians don't record in 128 bit AAC" with "Do you speak for all musicians? Are you a professional?", or to someone who says "Real filmmakers don't record on MP4" with "Do you speak for all filmmakers? Are you a professional?".

As an aspiring journo, if I went out to cover an event or story and took a photographer with me, I would leave it up to them what to shoot in, but for broadcast and published daily media, I would assume it was jpeg. If it was for a magazine, (especially a glossy publication), RAW would probably win out. For others outside that area, doing weddings, birthdays, etc, I would almost guarantee it would be RAW. They have less of a deadline to meet and so have more time to perfect the shots and need it in a more controlable format to work with.

OK, that's a useful argument (two folks have made it) - if the picture is only going into a newspaper or on a TV, where the resolution isn't exactly stellar, and is on the go and needs low-bandwidth transfer, I can see using JPEG - just as I can see using AAC for songs you play on your iPod, or MP4 for PowerPoint presentations. But somone who is trying to do high quality photography isn't going to use as lossy a format as JPEG - you lose too much information that way.

Video iPod or remote?

Alot of people are saying Apple would never release a video iPod with on-screen controls because of the smears and scratches!

Could this product therefore just be the remote for the MediaMac???
Who cares about scratches and smears on a remote control?

Think different!

I cannot even imagine what kind of scratches will surface on the base of that blackbook.

the surface was silver-ish. not black. I really like that design. the black top with the silver bottom like the ipod. Make a 13.3 version and i will buy.

refreshing...

The past month or so has been so quiet; no new rumors. The only thing to really talk about was the 20% drop in Apple's stock price. Now this. :)

Let the banter and hypothesizing begin and continue for the next 2 months!!

Try as I might I just cant wrap my head around a "real video iPod". I can totally see a home media center from the mac mini though.

I can only really see this new iPod as a Newton replacement.

I can only imagine the bitching and moaning of the scratches, my god the scratches!

PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Haha, yeah. My iPod is so freaking scratched, and w/ a full video.... that would be crazy. I think it would be stupid to kill the existing iPod and just turn it into a total video thing. Not all want that. Like me. I rarely watch video on my 5G iPod. I listen to music on it very often. So, I don't want a nano or an iPod aimed towards video.

Clearly if a touch screen ipod is introduced it will not have the same screen as the current ipods. touch screens are inherently made to be touched. I have followed Apple rumors long enough to just know that this is real and will be happening. Since the cat is out of the bag I expect to hear a consistent trickle of details before the release.
Ok, yeah, so I feel stupid about my previous scratch comment.
I think this will be cool, and I think it's going to happen. But I'll want a new one then. And... haha, that's not happening since I just bought a 5G and want a nano.
I think this could be more of a higher level thing? PDA and all the media stuff right together? B/c that would be so awesome.

The base of that surface is chrome, and you can see the white wire that links the iPod to the blackbook.

Yeah. But it's soooooo good looking.

You won't be saying that when its scratches up and the looks diminish with daily use. People had a problem with the chrome back on the iPod line, and the scratches that happened on they Al PowerBooks, you think Apple will not get a million+ complaints. Think Again not "Think Different." ;) :)

If it does become some sort of PDA gadget, I want it in anodized Al, like the iPod Mini. :)

Pros carry a PB with them on site so that the customer can see the image full screen. It also enables the photographer to do some minor editing (color correction, sticking in a product so the customer can get some idea of how it looks...) which an Ipod couldn't do (And if it could I would give a few ribs for it).
As for the guy who said most people shoot in JPEG....no. RAW is what pros use. From the Cannon 1Ds Mark II to the 5D to the 20D, Sinar 22megapixel backings, and high end Nikons all shoot RAW. I suppose those who use little digi cams for taking myspace pics shoot in JPEG, but anything higher than that? RAW.

My 3g 15GB is fried, but my PSP will hold me over till the new Ipod comes out, I can't wait.
HEY! HOW DARE YOU IMPLY I SHOOT LITTLE PICS OF MY FRIENDS AND I AND PUT IT ON MY MYSPACE B/C MY CAM SHOOTS IN JPEG! I don't even have a Myspace. Hurt my feelings. :( ;) jk, of course. I'm just in an odd mood this morning.

There is a large possibility that it is merely a claver prank.

Supposed release is 1st April.
Ring any bells.....

Tivo Killer?

I'm a LOYAL, DEVOTED mac user. I've ordered the MacBook Pro, and am anxiously waiting on that.

I also love my Tivo. I can't imagine anything taking it's place. Steve Jobs would have to do one heck of a job for me to replace it. Tivo changed the way I watch TV. I love it. Please don't kill it... LOL
