Don't give a crap about Classic...

Haven't used it in years and couldn't care less. If you need Classic now, then don't buy a Intel Mac.

The vast majority sees this as a non-issue. To claim this is going to hurt sales is stupid. Why am I waiting 6 weeks for an iMac and Crucial is backordered on memory for them if sales are "sluggish."

Who still uses Classic? I might as well complain that the current versions of Windows have done away with MS-DOS. (Which actually I did use a lot, but that's beside the point.. ;) )

Come on shard, get real, NOBODY misses MS-DOS.

I do. Hey, come on, it was handy back in the day - very UNIX-like - I used it a lot! ;) Plus, it was the only way I could run DETH, my Doom 2 level editor.

how dare you insult unix like that. apologize to unix now.

MS-DOS was definitely my friend. My old Dell (448MHz P3, 384mb ram) is still running well (though I hardly fire her up) and occasionally boot into DOS for Doom. Good ol' DOS Doom days...*godhand*:)

Yep, Doom and Doom 2 were awesome - Doom 2 is still one of my all-time favorite games. I loved using DETH to create impossible levels (invisible walls, spiral staircases, etc.) which were so intricate it would take forever to play through one level. :D

Yeah I have to say some of the stuff from the change over loss of dos stinks. Most of the stuff can be run the the dos shell or Command promit window. Not all of it mind you and a lot of problems with those old programs is stuff was based of the CPU speed. Now that ok as long as the CPU spends are not increase. Now running one those games designed for 133mhz Pentuim on a 2gighz AMD is pretty funny how fast stuff is moving

I honestly wasn't aware of this - thanks, I'll check it out after work! :)

Apple/Intel definitely didn't miss the boom...they focused on iPod/iMac G5 sales, milked the G5 iMacs for all they were worth, not to mention portable sales - and then after they'd sold some of their old stock came out with a new product. Many companies use this strategy of introducing new products after Christmas in an attempt to clear out old stock and put a new product in customer minds. "I just bought a new system a month ago! Guess I gotta start saving for this one too..." *SJ with evil grin on face* :D

Sales dosen´t seem to be sluggish in Norway, it´s a 4 week estimated shipping time from apple.no.
Then again, that could be due to the fact we are a small country not very high on the priority list:( :(

Hey, I said it was UNIX-like, not anyway near as good as UNIX. ;) What is this anyway, Pick on the Pirate Day? :p :D

LOL. Unix like as in HOW THE HELL? That it often had a black background with white text? That the main input device was a keyboard? That it had a CLI?

BAD ~Shard~ BAD.

Someone rub his nose is DOS please?

You wouldn't say that if you saw some of the levels I designed in DETH. :p

Don't care, he's right. In the UK we would punch a hole in your bowler hat, tear the badge of your top pocket, cut the end off your tie, and turn you umbrella inside out.

THAT'S how strongely we feel about it.

Old chap.

Not sure that's the issue, I think the sales are healthy, just not run-away. Personally I think that's to be expected. There's not much of a range to choose from yet, but it will come.

what do you expect launching right after christmas. Apple and Intel missed the christmas boom...

Oh I think they timed it to be in the lul after Christmas, to mask any slowness with "well no-one buys now anyway". I think it's the ideal time to start rolling out the new line up. The only alternative would have been to wait until later and roll out the whole line, but then the "Can Apple do it?" rumour mill would have been going crazy!

Wow, I had no idea what the consequences of such comments would be. Thank you for the enlightenment, it will not happen again. ;) :D

not enough oouuummffff!

software wise, not so much was changed.

But it was a good offering for the same price as a powerpc.

sales are down mainly because of the post-christmas release.

PS.. major retailers have stocked up on powerpc versions and these are being sold still in the major dept stores.

sales should pick-up if popular software runs native on it (eg photoshop, etc) but until then, expect a sluggish sale (customers are still wary on this 1st edn).

It maybe another 9 months before a revision comes along, and by then, Leopard would be out. We can expect Leopard to release features that utilise the intel chip in a more "natural" state than it is now on tiger.

But what does apple have in store for april? Is there a new machine that may help pick-up where the iMac left off? iMac the consumer desktop machine, we should expect the consumer portable MacBook to soar in sales when it does get out (but for reasons that overlooks the pitfalls mentioned).

Indeed Mr. Shard, Indeed.

I simply don't understand how this idea of sluggish sales ever started. All indications are that the iMac is selling very well indeed.

FUD rumours. Also apparently there are signs that some Apple Store dudes are saying "wait and see" to customers. But I think that's just ensuring that we have satisfied customers during the year, rather than just hard sell (i.e. this is a positive strategy for this year).
