Intel PowerMacs? Apple Phone? MacBooks Ship Date?

Appleinsider reports on a report by UBS Investment Research who reportedly had a "sit-down" with Apple executives including Peter Oppenheimer, Ron Johnson and Phil Schiller.

"Our research indicates that new Power Macs could be announced with Intel processors by September, but Apple’s Rosetta emulation software should still be needed to run Adobe’s major high-end applications like Photoshop at that time"

As previously reported, Microsoft and Adobe's transition to Intel-native applications will take some time. Adobe's next major revisions are not expected until 2007. Meanwhile, UBS notes a "very positive reaction" to the MacBook Pro based on conversations with Apple and surveys. The remainder of the information appears speculative, with the usual expecations of "new consumer markets for iPod speakers and Apple branded cell-phones over the next year".

Meanwhile, several users note that the MacBook Pro's "ship date" at the Apple Store has changed from "February" to "2-3 weeks", which simply means that those who order today will not likely receive the MacBook Pro before March. The shipment of those waiting for their January orders of the MacBook Pro appears to be soon -- many were originally slated for shipping by the 7th of Feb, but appears to have been pushed to the 10th.

Well Considering the Fact that they've been taking orders for a month already, it doesn't surprise me that people who order today won't see theirs until March.

Hopefully I'll see mine next week! Shipping between Feb. 10th and Feb. 15 is the latest i've heard.

It is probably the smartest time to release them though, since it will allow the different pro-apps to become intel native/universal. I just still find it a little strange that the Mac Book Pro got released before the intel iBook (or was this because they will probably use single-processor chips which are not being produced yet?).

Anyways, I hope to be settled into a decent job around September since I'm graduating from college here in May, that way I can buy a nice Pro-Intel (powermac) machine.

The PowerMac transition is dictated by Conroe I would think. And I have heard nothing more solid than "second half of 2006" on that front. Anyone know something more recent? I'd HOPE for summer Conroe, but fall seems as likely as not.

The reasons the iBook couldn't go Intel first are:

* Waiting for Core Solo I think, as you say.

* And making them outrun the pro PowerBooks (which Core Duo does for native apps) wouldn't make sense.

Adobe seems to be dead serious that they will wait until CS 3 for native Intel support.

I find it ironic that Adobe is about to make the same mistake Quark made when Apple moved to OS X. Quark waited a few years to release an OS X native version while Adobe was much quicker, and that cost Quark dearly. Now Quark may beat Adobe.

Aren't the solos really a duo chip with a defective execution core?

Or maybe only some of them will be a truncated duo, but could Intel be waiting to release the solos because they need to build up a stock of partially defective duos first?

This is why I am going out and buying a PowerMac G5 Saturday. I've been saving up and I'm taking the plunge. All my graphics software, CS2 and Studio 8, are PowerPC based and I don't need to upgrade any of it until next year, but I need the power now.

Hey, a Dual Core 2GHz G5 and the potential of 16GB Ram will be all I need for the next 3-5 years until I'm ready to upgrade my hardware again.

When the MacBook (iBook) comes out, I will get that to replace my current iBook. Only need it for email, surfing and road trips. Don't need it to be a work horse.

That's a lot EARLIER than I expected. Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest aren't scheduled until 2nd half of 2006 from Intel so that's right in the middle. Usually when a company says '2nd half' they mean the end of. However, with no native apps and Intel's usual practice of not allowing more than 2 cores in a desktop model, they'd have to release something special to be faster than a Quad G5 for pro users.

Could be. What's more surprising is that Apple got CoreDuo chips for the iMac before anyone else did for their laptops.

Based on what Apple has done lately, more speculation, I'm thinking that there may be some more products coming in March.

The short lived idea "under promising and over delivering" is an are where Apple has actually been able to deliver upon lately.

Given the speculators, professional or otherwise, have as the same limited information to go on, it may come down to expecting more of what Apple has been delivering lately. Which is, functioning products on time, or ahead of when they are expected to be released. Apple has been on a roll lately.

It's a hard thing to do, Apple has not only been right about their products, but they have delivered them on time, or ahead of time.

They are up there with the other highly respected companies who are doing the same and benefitting from it.

Both. Nobody has received a MacBook Pro yet and if you order one now it's 3-4 weeks.

I hope they do come out in September, maybe release them at Paris? Or even announced at WWDC, with a later release date. I start college in September, and a PowerMac is on the top of my list, and getting a G5 wouldn't make sense at this point.

I'm also hoping they come out with new cinema displays with iSights built in, as that seems to be the trend, and the only easy way of having a PowerMac with iSight kinda built in. Along with that PowerMac, I'll be getting a 20" or 23" screen, this 17 inch is a little cramped for video editing.

But what is Quark going to beat them at??? Everyone who has switched from Quark to InDesign usually takes a vow to never touch Quark again.

And who is going to beat Adobe to the punch in regards to Illustrator and Photoshop? Adobe bought their only true competition in Macromedia. I can't see Corel *snicker snicker* bringing Draw to the IntelMac and being a success. Any designer worth their weight wouldn't touch CorelDraw, even on a PC.

Someone once said that everyone should get off of Adobe's back about their timeframe for MacIntel adoption by stating the fact that Adobe has constantly through the years continuously been tweaking patches and updates for the Mac versions of their products. Remember when the G4 came out? They tweaked Photoshop to run better on the Altivec Engine. Same thing with the G5. Adobe has been good to us, damn good.

And think about this, how many pros are going to rush out and get the very first PowerMac/MacPro? I don't think many. They are all invested in PowerPC apps that have no certainty of either working in Rosetta or being shifted over to Universal Binaries. Think about all the RIP Servers out there from DuPont to Shiraz. Think about all the Image setters like Barco and Kodak. Some of these Image setters still don't like anything newer than Illustrator 9.0 files!!!! How do we know that all of our special scanner/printer drivers are going to work and when? A program that I use to create bar codes just switched over to an OS X version only 18 months ago. How long have we been on OS X?!?!?!?!? 5-6 Bloody YEARS!!!!

I can see CS3 coming out sometime between 11/06 and 3/07. Not bad, especially when people are still just getting acclomated to CS2 in the field. Take your time Adobe, all I wish is that you do it right when you do it.

Which products do you think they've delivered ahead of time?

Surely you don't believe the RDF from Jobs about the Intel iMac and MacBook Pro's being ahead of time? Truth is that it's more likely Apple were waiting on Intel.
