I was under the impression that in OS X Apple write their own drivers, especially in the case of the Retina MBP...

Hence why it takes an AGE for some devices to get support if the company doesn't release the drivers themselves...

Afaik they do write their own to an extent.
I would complain more about the lack of features of a device that Apple's own drivers support. Apple is also a company that makes more profit than Nvidia, AMD and Intel combined. Most of the driver is already written they just need to deal with the OS hooks. Once they were a small tiny little company they had an excuse but today they really should do better.
