Consensus on release of New MacBook Pro

Hola,

Registered because I have two comments:

1. I'm all for critical commentary, but.... wow. Some people really need to get a hobby. Guess what- I spend most of my time posting on the Ferrari boards about how bad it is towin' my mobile home. For some reason, they're not receptive. Go fig.

2. I was moderately enthused about the recent revamp of the iBook (sorry, MacBook non-pro). Like the price point. But I need a larger (either 15" or 17") screen for my work machine- my current, dying G4 iBook is eight years old and has the small screen, and I need a larger one to work with. What's the best guesstimate for a release of new machines- I can hobble about until, say February-ish, but I don't think I'll make it 'till next summer. Helpful advice appreciated, preferably before these deals end today.

For some people, this is their hobby.

Thanks

Thanks for the pointers. I had a feeling it's an oft-asked question. *sigh* It was so much easier when the co-incided everything with the MacWorlds. Loved the old MacWorld Bostons on the pier. Anyway, I need to decide if I'm going to pull the trigger on the MacConnection deal. Used to do MacConnection back in the ol' days. Been shopping Apple Store (retail and on-line) recently... well, just like the design- sucker for it. But would prefer to get the deal and/or avoid state sales tax on this purchase. My old (real old) iBook is truly dying, and I love the deals, but I'd rather not pull the trigger since I think I might be able to hoof it out if there's a *significant* upgrade. Decisions, decisions. Time to cowboy up, I guess.

Ummm.... AutoCAD isn't the be all and end all of CAD, there are many fine other CAD/BIM packages out in the market ranging from serviceable to well whatever the top end of the market.(maybe the one Frank Gehry had built in order to not hold up his brilliance*). Many of them run on Mac OS X, but not autoCAD. If you doing anything that serious with software fees in that range then really the computer is the second choice your going to make.

As for Games, yes that market is huge in terms of dollar and yes Apple doesn't push the user side of the market. But which side do you really want to be on of a market the ones spending the money or the ones getting it.

Apple would seem to be doing very nicely out of the games market like they do very well out of the entertainment market generally just not in a very visible way.

Still i would like to see more games on the Mac, but a don't think that's going to help cover those CAD software fees now is.

*I may not always believe in his brilliance but he does and you have to like that.

So you're not really disagreeing then. ;)

As the original purpose of this thread alludes to, the Allendale processors might be coming out in Jan., which means (if the Nehelem procs in the Mac Pros are anything to go by) a MacBook Pro shortly following that with that processor. The performance would most likely be considerably better than the current C2D's.

The question is, can you wait, and what are you going to be using the machine for?

If the MBP suits your needs now, and you really need a notebook sooner than later, then just buy a current gen.

That being said, it will be interesting to see how the new MBP's perform, should they indeed get the Arrandale in Jan/Feb.

Grist for thought

Been out of the CPU game for a while. Guess my problem is that the MacConnection deal (expiring tomorrow according to their rep) is very attractive- I want the mid range MBP (two GPUs), and the $250 discount is mighty attractive; it's only $50 more than a refub, and I don't have to pay my (High!) state sales tax and S&H. I just know that they are near the end of the cycle, and I hate regrets- were Apple to "pull a Jobs" and do something truly interesting with the next revision, I'd hate myself for a long time.

If it's just Arrandale, though (and perhaps GPU, since nVidia seems to be out of the game) I'd just as soon pool the trigger. It's not like I'm doing that requires that sort of horsepower on my laptop.
